Time for another upgrade I think.

GPU is still going strong but the processor is starting to show signs it needs to be replaced.

Have got some ideas of what I want to do but I would appreciate a recommendation on the best combination of the following...

I am on a tight budget but want to get this lump of components out of the way so I can upgrade the rest as I go. I need to keep it future proof but bring the budget down as much as possible.

Also I was on call all last night so I may have missed something stupid and not realised

Any ideas to bring the budget down but keep a similar level of performance is welcome:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £997.51 (includes shipping: £14.10)

Naturally the other components I already have. Main HDD is still ok so will be retained as my main storage drive in slave to the new SSD.

Also I know i Have wasted a little money on the hydro cooler but I will keep this as is or similar as changing to an AIO on my current made it 100% quieter and my missus who is an overworked nurse really appreciated that :)

No bay isn't an issue ive got some USB CD and BluRay drives at home. Being stingy saving a few £ for the disc version.

If I opt for something more impressive what are your thoughts on temporarily utilising my existing PSU? Its an old non modular 750w unit and seems to be doing ok. It has been going since 2010.

Also what is the most cost effective Ryzen compatible ram.

If I spend some more on the build I would have to do it in stages.

My Latest attempt but still out of my budget.

I know the case is expensive but its one of the only I like.

If any one can suggest a cheaper similar case I'm all ears.

Some caveats:

I could go Midi Again but ill be honest my current Midi with even just a 480 it is cramped and needs a bit more space for the heat to have a nice convection channel. Tends to pool at the bottom and bump the GPU temps up even with an extract on the side.

If i can get similar performance and get the overall down to around 800 that would be ideal (realise this is a tall order)

PC will be gaming and some editing (nothing major), with the editing it isn't stressed for time and the current GPU will cut it until I can save for better.

Will the PSU above support future SLI/Crossfire upgrades?

Any further advice appreciated, I have been out of the tech loop for a while when it comes to hardware.

underbudget, but would be a capable gaming build (get windows elsewhere with the rest of the budget - ocuk prices aren't competitive)
went with a 500gb ssd instead, the size increase would be appreciable :) nvme ssds aren't worth it unless you're constantly trashing the drive (eg for video editing)

Noticed that you opted for 1600 and not 1600x.

What am I missing going for the 1600 over the 1600x, 1700 or 1700x?

PS thanks for all the advice guys. Think ive just about managed to crack my budget taking a variety of the products suggested so its much appreciated.

1600x is basically a higher clocked version of the 1600 - but all ryzen processors are unlocked, so you can get the same speeds with a 1600 and 1600x (silicon lottery depending, of course)
not of much use as i've specced in an aio clc watercooler - but the 1600 comes with a stock cooler whereas the 1600x doesnt

1700/x has 8c16t, vs 1600/x having 6c12t. for gaming, the 1600/x is sufficient.
if you were doing heavy processor-bound cpu intensive work, then the 1700/x or 1800x would make sense.
for just gaming, then stick with the 1600/x

So really the 1600x is just a pre clocked version meaning if I’m over clocking anyway there’s no point wasting the extra?

Will I ever miss the 1700/1800 at 4K gaming or is there not enough reliance on the CPU to warrant it?

I suppose if worse comes to worse resale values aren’t bad enough that I couldn’t go 1800 or 1700 a year down the line :)

Seeing as its payday I wand to put in my first stage of build order tonight.

Any last minute advice with regards to:

-Nice sub £100 case, suitable for a decent sized (and possibly future x2 of them) GPU, watercooling and naturally an ATX form factor.
-Am i definitely not going to regret getting a 1600 and saving some money?
-Am I going to miss anything more than DDR4 @ 3000 for gaming?

Any overclocking is a gamble. The 1600 on average will be only slightly behind a 1600x when overclocked as high as possible.

For memory for Ryzen the current best performing choice is the 8 pack 3200 ram. When I had 2 x 8gb it ran at 3333c14 or 3466c15, this does depend on motherboard and cpu as results can vary but most seem to get 3200c14 or better.

I’ve opted for these now thanks. Motherboard I’ve gone for the Cheaper ROG strix b350 as it’s in sale and it matches my colour scheme

Just need to make this 1600, 1600x 1700, 1800 decision really. It will mean my build takes longer to finance but hey. If I’m not going to see any benefit though I won’t bkther

Not even considering wasting my money in TR4

If you wait the next generation of a Ryzen are out shortly and would be expected to be faster. I chose the 1700 as it was that v a i7-7700k and I was concerned about future proofing seeing as increasingly games etc. need more cores / threads. A 1600 was not available at the time.

I might do this for two reasons, i can opt for next gen or I can get current gen (hopefully) a bit cheaper.

Thanks for the advice.

Just going to get the case and PSU for now and start putting the cooling in. IM in no rush.
