my pc is still going strong despite it being 10years old.
I've now decided to update the graphic card, im not a big time heavy gamer as such , mostly fps , I don't do online playing either .
I'm running
Winows 7 64bit
amd phenom II X4 965 PROCESSOR 3.4GHZ
Hyper X Fury red 8gb ram
2tb wd Black hdd
600w psu
Screen resalution is recommended and running at 1920 x 1080.
As the machine is getting on , I would be looking for a good second hand one but I'm not to sure which card would be best for my system specs.
If some one can reccomend a simple card to straight swap over would be very helpful indeed.
Many thanks
Rick

Hi and welcome to the forums. :)

What gpu will you be upgrading from and can you tell us the make and model of that 600w psu please?

Yeah I forgot to mention that. I have the amd radeon HD5770 pci-E 16x 1GB DDR5. THE PSU is a cyberpowerPC 600w quiet power supply .

Thats probably a good idea, after all its been running nearly for 10 years now.. Corsair are meant to be worth there money, but they tend to go for big bucks.

Real shortage of PSUs at the moment, seasonic and super flower are also generally highly regarded. Even good brands can do cheap bad PSUs so good idea to look at reviews and go for one with a long warranty. The ratings (bronze/gold) are just to do with efficiency, and while higher rated ones generally use better parts it's not an indication of quality alone - a good bronze psu can better than a bad gold psu

Could always try used market, they go quick but ebay has some ex mining psus of big brands. If its for an upgrade of an older system rather then a new build i wouldent worry too much. just my view. As for gpu 570 depentant on budget would be fine, even a nvidia 970 would be a nice upgrade, sure there are lots on both sides around that era for good price.

No thank you for your thoughts on the subject. Its a lot harder than I thought it was going to be.
I was just after a straight swap for a newer card than the one it came with. Its only a 1gb so was looking at a 2gb or slightly higher, say like a 3 or maybe 4 gb .
I wouldn't have thought my 600w psu would cause any concern as its never been or caused any problem .

Newer cards tend to be more powerful, more power = more current draw, the last thing you want is to tax an aging PSU too hard or it might go pop. You'd be better off replacing it along with the GPU as others have said, I'd certainly be reluctant to spend £200-£300 on a new card, and see it die if the PSU fails...

TPU says the HD 5770 uses up to 110 watt, does that sound right to you? If you wanted to stay in the same power profile, the 1650, 1650 Super (way better value than the 1650) or the 5500 XT are all in that bracket. An RX 570 would be near in older games, especially if you undervolt it. Any of those cards should be a big upgrade.

Some other (relatively) low power alternatives: GTX 1050, 1050 Ti, 1060, RX 460, RX 470 and RX 560.

Hopefully AMD will release a low-end Navi card at some point soon, like the mobile RX 5300, which would also be a good fit.

Older cards like the 750 Ti would work too.

I wouldn't go much lower than that or the upgrade wouldn't be worthwhile. I'd also be careful of old high-end cards because you could easily double the power consumption of your 5770.

The 5600 XT and 1660, 1660 Super have a slightly higher TDP than the 5770, I'm not sure what that equates to in real world power draw, but I doubt they would be heaps more.

Thank you very much. This near spot on in what I've been trying to find out. There's so many cards from the same manufactures but with different names, I find it all mind boggling really.
At the end of the day, the system has always been fine and ran faultlessly all these years, just thought a better card would be nice as the hd is only 1gb . What would be the best size ram card to go up to , 2 3 4 6 8 ?

If you mainly play older DirectX 9 games and don't intend to take the card with you (when you upgrade), then 2GB should be fine and will leave your options open, so you can select from a lot more cards.

If you're playing newer (-3 yrs) games and using DirectX 10-12, then at least 3GB, preferably 4GB would be sensible for 1080p. If they're only older DX11 (+3yrs) games then 2GB should still be okay, I have a RX 550 2GB which is fine @ 1080p, since it can't play anything new at this resolution anyway.

Your CPU probably won't be able to play games at a detail level that needs 8GB video RAM and it would really limit your used choices. But, if you're planning to take it with you and you're getting a 470 or 570, it is worth paying a small (e.g. £15) premium.

Yeah, I'd agree if you can, but don't pay a premium for e.g. a 4gb 1050 or RX 560, since you might as well get a 570 which is a much faster card.
