Hi Guys,
Im wondering if its worth me to switch from XP to Vista 64 bit……..? However my computer specs are E6600 overclocked to 3.2 running 2GB of ram. Will this be enough to make the transfer over to vista 64bit or I would be much better putting on vista 32 bit?
Thanks

That will be more than ok, definetly go 64bit

Grab another 2GB, trust me its worth the outlay and with prices for the stuff these days its criminal not to :D

Running a unclocked E6300 and 2Gb 6400 and vista flies along.
You will be fine. What's the reason for wanting it though?

Also if you do get it, get retail, can be found 2nd hand for £100. Just keep your eye out for it.

It means for an extra £5 you can change your mobo and when windows 7 comes out, you can just buy the upgrade disc.

For me the only things that have disappointed me as far as Vista x64 is concerned are the way it has trouble dealing with removable pen drives and hard drives and it's still can suffer from poor file transfer/copy rates, both of these problems vary for me in that 1 day everything will be fine another time problems. Pen/removable drives the problem for me has been that it says it's copied the file(s) over but when opened at the far end they are sometimes corrupt.

Never had that problem. However I did on xp and found out that my usb ports where screwed. Have you tried buying a usb pci card.

Vista will run fine for you, I've personally gone back to XP for a while and quite liking it at the moment, I do miss some elements of Vista (well mainly that Vista automatically sorts start menu A-Z :p) but overall I'm preferring XP right now, performance in games has gone up, so obviously my Vista install got borked somewhat when I moved from Nvidia to ATi. :|

In no way is that Vista's fault. You have a hardware issue somewhere, be it your USB ports or controller, or the media you are copying to.

that's a sweeping statement..

vista was plagued with usb/network issues on release.

sorted now with SP1 + patches = oh yes :)

I've really come to like Vista 64. Main problems have been related to games, however I've sorted most of the issues and will be building an XP games PC after Christmas.

It's the same hardware I've had XP on which ran without any problems and both the flash drives and USB portable hard drives I use on my work laptop (XP) without any problems so I've just assumed that it's a Vista x64 problem. I've also seen the problem on my laptop which runs Vista x32 Business, don't get me wrong, I don't regard it as a major problem, happens only when copying large files around and for me it's just an annoyance not a stopper.

I've got all the latest security updates including SP1 and SP2 beta.

Problems since installing sp2 beta? Or have you always had them. Maybe a compatability problem between vista and your motherboard? I presume you have tried reinstalling your chipset drivers as well?

Nah, I installed SP2 beta in the hope that it might fix things.

As I've pointed out it only seems to happen when copying over large files, so for example transferring hi-def stuff over to the PS3 but I've now hard wired the PS3 in so can media serve the files over so it's no longer a real problem.
