Time to build a new PC...

OK - I've decided to take the plunge and build myself a new PC - upgrading from my old Q6600 machine to the new I7 processors. Excellent news for my nearest and dearest on so many fronts (but mainly because they get my old machine). Bad news for me because my bank balance is going to suffer.

OK, first off why? I'll be honest I am into my gaming but don't clock in a lot of hours - i have other commitments unfortunately. I'm not really a serious over-clocker, i'm not fascinated by benchmarks and synthetic tests although i like to see "kit" working to its full potential a do use them to differentiate. My own machine isn't obsolete - far from it, it runs everything i want very nicely. I think I'm just fascinated with new technology and love to see what it has to offer - i guess its turning in to my "thing"

So first off i should share my specs (ordered last week).

The OCUK 930 I7 4ghz bundle:

*OVERCLOCKED* Intel Core i7 930 2.80GHz @ 4.00GHz / Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Motherboard / Patriot Viper 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz DDR3 Bundle - Noctua cooler NHU12 P

Why: looks like a decent MB (good balance on the features), processor looks impressive and OCUK will worry about the OC for me - i get the benefit of someone else expertise without too much of a premium. as i said, not really experienced on OC myself, just dabbled.

Patriot Torqx 64gb Solid state to run Windows 7 op

Why: Just because i want to experience what these SSD are like. Some reading says these, although not as good as intel, are pretty good so they seemed good value to me.

Coolermaster CM690 II with a CM 850 silent pro PSU

Why: nice case, on special price, will fit in my stuff... Got some good reviews too if you search google. PSU looks strong on paper and will cover my power needs

WD Caviar Black 1TB storage

Why: for some reason i struggled to define what i wanted here. Yes i want somewhere to put my files, but was also concerned about the size of the Torqx so thought some apps/ games might end up here. Net result, I brought a large capacity performance drive. Still bugs me though because I might want another to go to Raid 0 if lots of apps end up here...
the rest of the stuff I already own so:

Graphics - 4870X2
Sound - Onboard output to an OnKyo TX-SR606 and a set of 5.1 gaming headphones.

I'm waiting for OCUK to make this stuff available - hoping today - and so will post my build progress if people are interested. As always would love some feedback and advice on building this stuff and please share any "tricks" you may have with me.

I'll try and do a round up of the parts in the relevant sections of the forums too so let me know if you have a particular interest and i'll do my best for you.

What do you think?

Ok sorry if this sounds pedantic, but based on the above why are you even considering upgrading? Even more so to an i9* which strengths lay within it's overclocking as to with the Q6600 you already have. I fear you you are being mislead by a bandwagon purely on what other people are buying without actually realising why.

My advice is don't let your bank balance suffer. Instead invest some time into your existing CPU, get it up to 3.4Ghz for a notable free performance upgrade.
