time to get a proper car...

ok, so my last two cars have been old bangers...first up: an old 205 xs that i bought as a stop-gap, which ended up lasting over two years...and then a 106 xsi bought about 12 months ago - which i have just been informed has failed it's mot. it's not economically sound to get the 106 repaired so once i have worked out how am i getting it home again (previous mot expired last week) it's going on the bay and we'll see what i get back.

that aside (needed to vent a little, bad timing!!!) i now need to find a replacement. had enough of buying old nails and running them into the ground so i want to get something a bit newer thats going to last me. the problem is, i really don't know what i want... what i do know, however, is that i want something that looks reasonably professional (starting a little venture on the side which means meeting new clients etc), all mod cons - abs, air con and all the rest of it, doesn't have eye wateringly expensive maintenance costs, will be reliable...and all within a budget of around £5k not including insurance.

so, suggest away...!

(would prefer things around focus/golf sized, but don't let that put you off suggesting alternatives - i'm not overly precious about a particular 'type' of car at this stage)

edit: p.s. i'm also with fox on the condition > mileage argument...so don't let that put you off suggesting more prestige brands that a higher mileage, under the assumption that they are fully stamped up etc.

the problem im coming up against is that everything i look at i just go 'meh'...nothing is really standing out...i'm not expecting the latest and greatest for £5k, but at the same time it's not an insignificant amount of money...cars make me go grrr sometimes!!!

Sorry mate but Mondeo! I'm sure an Octavia would also do the job well however or an older Passat. Alternative choice being the Citroen C5 but I wouldn't bother unless you want an Estate.

I'm going to bosh an Octy vRS in the mix, although meeting clients and clients being people and people for the most part being idiots it may not be the best choice as OBVIOUSLY it's a Skoda! Gosh!

Seat Leon Cupra or whatever 180bhp with bodykit if they go for 5k now, OR the Leon with a backside, forget the name of it now... very very cheap for a newish car, and I hear the 2.3 or 2.5 or whatever is nice.

Hope that's given you some food for the thinking.

i would personally love a bmw, but i dont think the budget will stretch to one that is worthwhile owning!

looking at the mondeo's and i do actually quite like them, ghia x spec see's a lot of car for the money...not sure i could live with the wooden trim though...i will keep looking to see if there is one with something more along the lines of brushed aluminium etc. i dont mind driving larger cars but i'm not sure how i would get on with one day to day - the parking spaces at work are miniscule, and there not much better at home either!

what sort of mpg am i going to see from the 2 litre? home > work > home is about an 8 mile round trip...though we do do quite a few longer journeys as well, for which a comfier car would be welcome, plus it looks quite nice for the clients i will be seeing too.

Try answering these questions, it might help us.

How many miles do you drive a year?
Does the age of your car matter?
How many seats do you need?
Do you like comfy cars, fun cars?
Do you give a flying [expleative denoting intercourse] how big the boot is?
How much are you planning on spending on running costs.
