time to get a proper car...

what sort of mpg am i going to see from the 2 litre? home > work > home is about an 8 mile round trip...though we do do quite a few longer journeys as well, for which a comfier car would be welcome, plus it looks quite nice for the clients i will be seeing too.

Anywhere from 25 - 34 mpg depending on how you drive. (assuming you mean the petrol)

4 miles each way he's going to be seeing about 25mpg at the most. No engine is going to be anywhere near economical with this sort of use cycle as the engine barely heats up.

I get around 28 mpg from a cold cycle on a 5 mile trip every morning. (although my sig would suggest otherwise)

edit: I'm currently using a mk3 (54) 2.0 Mondeo

I get 27.5 :p

How many miles do you drive a year?

Put it this way, I live 8 miles round trip from work, and sometimes I car share, also if I need to use the car for work purposes I get in excess of 50p a mile expenses...but then I have a new venture on the go which is due to see this rise shortly - but not by massive amounts. Oh, and I think nothing of driving to Edinburgh from Warwickshire - which I've done in both a 205 and a 106 without any issues at all. For the purpose of this exercise, however, let's assume less than ~12k per annum all in.

Does the age of your car matter?

I'm going to have to come up with some way of financing the £5k, which is probably going to end up being a personal loan over ~3 years. So, from that perspective I dont really want to be paying finance off for an 'old' car - if that makes sense.

How many seats do you need?

85% of the time it's just me. I'm one of these that thinks 3-door hatchbacks look far better, but that said I am certainly not against the practicality benefits of a 5-door. The problem is, when I look at something like a Mondeo - whilst its a 'nice' car, I just dont *need* that much of it. If that makes sense?!

Do you like comfy cars, fun cars?

A good mix between the two - I certainly enjoy a nice bit of ooomf, but at the same time I don't want to break my back going through town!

Do you give a flying [expleative denoting intercourse] how big the boot is?

Not especially, if I have a need to lug something large about then I just find a vehicle thats appropriate for the job in hand at the time.

How much are you planning on spending on running costs.

I dont want the running costs to be eye watering. I'm not doing much mileage to really worry too much about it, but at the same time I don't fancy replacing tyres on 18" wheels if you get me!

Tell us about any cars you've experienced you liked/disliked (tell us why).

My car history reads like this: Ford Orion, Peugeot 106 Quiksilver, Peugeot 206 GTi 180, Peugeot 205 XS, and the one that has just gone bang - Peugeot 106 XSi. As you can see, nothing particularly outstanding - though I did thoroughly enjoy driving the '180, I only got rid because my mileage doubled overnight due to a change in personal circumstances.

Hope this helps with the suggestions!

I hear A4 Avant Quattro's with the 1.9TDI 130 engine in them are good...

Seriously, Focus/Mondeo. If you want to be different, look at a late model Mazda 323. Get the 1.8 or 2 litre in exec spec - great fun!
