Having been a PC gamer for many, many, many years I'm presently in a bit of a hole. Back in the Quake, Unreal, Half life and original BF days etc I used to love FPS games and was pretty good at them and loved the multiplayer.

However something has gone wrong, after a big spell of playing Warcraft and mainly racing games on consoles I seem to have lost the ability to play games properly. Now some things have changed, my Anykey keyboard that I had from day dot died and I had to get used to the WASD again, I changed from a CRT to a 24" Dell TFT which took a fair bit of getting used but generally I'm just having problems.

I bought the last MW2, BFBC2 both games were good but I couldn't play them to the standard I wanted to or expected. I've now bought MOH and again the game is very good I'm sure but I'm not.. I got to rank 6 with a Skill rating of around 1650 but since then I'm going backwards and now around 1450. I'm dead before I realise, I appear to be shooting someone about 50 times only to be killed with 1 shot..

Is it time to call it a day?

I've no idea at the moment how to improve as the harder I try the worse I get it seems :(

I think you just need a title to get you back into the feek if things again. I find the older I get the fussier and harder to please I become. To a certain extent it's a case of 'been there, done that already'.

Remember game design changes, we change and publishers in most cases can dictate to the developer some key aspects of the game design (perhaps less so if you're a big boy like i.d.software).

There's only so many Stalker / Fear / FO3 / Deus Ex type games made every year (Triple A titles). Thank goodness for CS:S. :)

I have atm about twelve games installed on just one of my drives and there's little to entice me to play much of any of them. Some are mp, some single players one like The Witcher (a great effort for a third person rpg), but for me it simply doesn't compare that much with the likes of an fps / rpg like the ones I have previously mentioned. I pay a little attention to reviews and feedback, and take into account best as I can with regard to age groups before I buy a game now. The last very, very good game experience I had this year (if memory serves me correct) was back in April when I managed to get System Shock 2 working on Vista 64. New Vegas should balance that out a bit. Next year however looks to be good for titles.

I tried getting back into CSS after 3 years and it wasn't happening. Repetition and twitch reaction stuff - if you had it before you can get it back just can't be arsed with it personally.

I woudn't be bothered about the keyboard but for me the mouse is crucial. Get yourself a proper gaming mouse and mousemat - it's the one purchase I've made that made an instant improvement.

Beyond that i'd just say try and enjoy the game without over focussing on stats too much and you will improve naturally

do feel like this some days but now i opt for fun over uber noobkilling:D

can still hold my own for a couple of rounds on the best servers or against the very best if im upto it but after then concentration goes and i just cant be arsed :p

when we used to play cod 1 and uo you have a break for a month or so it took you like 3 month to get back to optimum or what i would say exceptable standard. just like quake and so on with twitch shots . still play my games now like that without aiming up lol.

just enjoy your gaming try not to pressure yourself it will become enjoyable again

I've got a Roccat Kone and Taito mousemat, I doubt very much it's setup properly as there's way to many options but I'm sure it ain't that. I've heard the Dell Monitor has an input lag but with my reflexs again I doubt it thats.

I was just playing MOH, first couple of games I barely moved a couple of metres without dying and was getting pretty annoyed, then I notied there were twice as many people in the other team. I swapped server (random) and ended up on hardcore Team Attack one (with balanced teams) and for some reason did OK and was back in the +'s each game.

I think you may be right about the stats, I pay way too much attention to them but they are there so you have to really, for some it shows how good you are but then again it shows how bad you are! I think I'd be able to chill out and enjoy more without the stats tbh.

I don't want to sound negative, but I give up shortly after Counter Strike - Source was released, the quality of the players abilities out weighed mine on most servers.

Team Fortress Classic was the one that I really loved.

Now most kids have access to a PC, they all play them and they just so happen to be amazing at killing you with one shot!

Left 4 Dead 2 is based on teamwork, well the campaign is, so others make up for your shortfalls, or mine to be specific, it's great to play at night and has a good community in my experience, it is great fun in my opinion, so if you haven't tried it I recommend it.

Ive been a pc game for around the same length of time and Ive felt similarly about the current crop of PC shooters. I can compete if I put in the time to get good but Ive just not found any of them really fun or rewarding to play.

Its not usually a problem but I found especially with Bad Company 2 that I really had to put a lot of time in before I started topping the board on more than a one off basis.

Its almost certainly rose tinited glasses on my part but IMO nothing in the current generation of shooters comes close to the five year old BF2. Its about time modern shooters brought something more than improved graphics to the party.
I'd take the first few Battlefield games or the classic Quake3 engine shooters - RTCW, MOHAA, SOF2 etc over the current crop any day.

Yes it's time to call it a day. Judging by the games you listed, you must be at least 30+. So it's fair to say that it's time you started to concentrate on your family, not your frags.

Isnt that pretty ageist? I have quite a few good friends in that age range and they seem to be able to balance a good job, a kid (some have more then one) and family life as well as enjoy gaming, and be good at it. Its very much horses for courses. Some people decide that they want to take some time doing up a car over a few years, some look towards music, maybe learn guitar and get good, and others play games. I believe that as long as you have a healthy balance, there is no need to "concentrate" on anything more then another if your sensible with it.

Completely agree. I actually still play RTCW and MOHAA when I can. Quake 3 I have on steam but it doesnt like Win7 very much.

fps's online are just crap now, thanks to unlocks, small servers, even smaller maps and crappy game types. i still find myself going back to joint ops for andvance and secure and tdm (6year old game), nothing for me has replaced it as yet, i doubt it will unless novalogic pull there finger out there arse, but i bet they go to the dark side aswell just for the money.

they also think by making the MP side of the game more in-depth and giving us a co-op mode they can skimp on a good length SP.

Maybe he should never watch TV again too?

Gaming is a form of entertainment, age has nothing to do with it.

I'm 29 and finding that I am being disapointed with most releases, MOH offers nothing new and the MP I find extremely difficult, I cant help but feel that everyone has automatic aim and kills me in two bullets when it takes me ages to spot, aim and the a full clip to kill someone. Its a different playing style though, I keep running and gunning out of frustration and that gets you no where

BC2 I absolutely love, only reason I dont play it as much is because i've hammered to the point of boredom. I find if I take a break from it for a week or two and then play it I enjoy it more

I think you should try some other games, what about 3rd person type sit back and play games? Have you played Just Cause 2 or Batman AA, play them on a 360 pad both are very cheap from the devs website and its a relaxing way to game rather than the hectic frag fest that is online FPS
