Time to give up...

Yes it's time to call it a day. Judging by the games you listed, you must be at least 30+. So it's fair to say that it's time you started to concentrate on your family, not your frags.

30+?! I'm 20 and played Unreal, Quake and HL when they came out.

Have a break and don't force it

Would be my advice. I find that sometimes you just become terrible at the game purely for no real reason. If you continue to play you invariably start to get angry and frustrated that you are not playing well and this leads to you playing even worse. Take a break and come back in a few days/week and you will be able to start afresh without the frustration hampering your play.

i think you need to play for the fun and not seriousness of the online community anymore....i find it very frustrating playing mw2 and bf2, if i make a few kills every map im happy, im not a serious gamer anymore due to the fact i no longer have the time to put in, id rather play l4d on expert or on a modded l4d2 server and have a laugh with folks who i play with.....most are aged 30 - 40 and probably in the same situation......we just laugh at the kids calling us noobs etc...it adds to the fun factor......

As another 30+ player I have also given up on the fps scene as they are just become stale and repetitive. Worst is the multiplayer where there are too many hackers or immature players (spawn camping, etc).
My best advice? Try Armed Assault II - yes it is a bit buggy, power-hungry and serious, but majority of players are adults. Also the pace of the game may suit you too.

You're getting old, so get used to it :D
Ten years ago I was an awesome FPS'er.....now, not so much :D

Back in the day of Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Mechwarrior 4, Operation Flashpoint and Half-Life I thought I was pretty damned good. Now I can't hit an Elephant's bum with a cricket bat...

A) I'm much more on-edge and easily surprised.
B) My reflexes aren't as quick.
C) The younger kids online hand my arse to me on a plate every time.

I much prefer to play RPGs these days. :D

Also, my mental capacity for RTS games seems to have flown out the window. I used to love Age of Empires and Red Alert but I just panic on modern games now and can't keep everything going in my head. People who say games are bad for your brain are loony tbh - some demand ridiculous amounts of multi-tasking and mental dexterity.

By the way I'm talking I sound like I've hit my 40s or 50s, but I'm only a child of the 80's :(

With anything, you improve the most when you lose the game.

When you lose, try and think about what you did wrong and improve on it next time.

don't focus on stats or anything like that, play your own game and you'll enjoy it much more.

You'll also find yourself getting into "lulls" where you just can't figure out whats wrong. learning curves with most competetive games are pretty steep! so don't be discouraged by the lulls

I agree... I remember so much frustration with some games back in the 8 and 16 bit days! No save-wherever-you-like then ;) I think I had vastly much more patience back when I was a schoolkid :p

I have a hard time with games that don't have that quake "feel" to the mouse responsiveness.

MW2 and BC2 for example feel light years apart, the former of which I can do those accurate-ish 180º turn & shoot manoeuvres - forget it in BC2, character feels bogged down despite ~70fps.

The MoH beta felt the same as BC2 (presumably also Frostbite 3.0), so was a put-off.

Binning the CRT a few years ago didn't aid the situation either!

i have to totally agree that most games now days lack the SP values that they used to, i find that SP games are shorter and shorter, seems like developers are running out of new material and concerntrate on the MP side of things, the last time i actually enjoyed a game was half-life 2. the other side of the problem is bigger levels takes longer to build, which requires a lot of space, so to have a big game your talking nearly 50-100 gigs of HD space, imagine how long it would take to download, games have come so graphically advanced that it's a catch 22 situation for developers, do they build a game that takes 4 years to build and test, or 2 years where levels are shorter but has better MP games.

Having been a PC gamer for many, many, many years I'm presently in a bit of a hole. Back in the Quake, Unreal, Half life and original BF days etc I used to love FPS games and was pretty good at them and loved the multiplayer.

However something has gone wrong, after a big spell of playing Warcraft and mainly racing games on consoles I seem to have lost the ability to play games properly. Now some things have changed, my Anykey keyboard that I had from day dot died and I had to get used to the WASD again, I changed from a CRT to a 24" Dell TFT which took a fair bit of getting used but generally I'm just having problems.

I bought the last MW2, BFBC2 both games were good but I couldn't play them to the standard I wanted to or expected. I've now bought MOH and again the game is very good I'm sure but I'm not.. I got to rank 6 with a Skill rating of around 1650 but since then I'm going backwards and now around 1450. I'm dead before I realise, I appear to be shooting someone about 50 times only to be killed with 1 shot..

Is it time to call it a day?

I've no idea at the moment how to improve as the harder I try the worse I get it seems :(

Classic post Warcraft game burnout. Take a break, take a holiday, go travelling, do something to get your mind out of the place your in right now, because games are meant to be fun, and if your not having fun, there is no point forcing yourself to play them.

I went through exactly the same thing, sorted myself out in terms of health / work / lifestyle / hobbies balance, i get some time to play games, but i can appreciate it more because im not doing it all the time, and haven't been doing for a while.

Also, try to find a group of buddies you can team up / clan with. L4D2 is a great suggestion, as you mellow out, you definitely find less competitive and more cooperative game styles more enjoyable, otherwise in the games you are currently playing, you can use teamwork to improve your chances and give the game some extra fun in the form of the social aspect too.

Well some good suggestions above and I'm sure most apply to me :)

To pick up on a few, I'm pretty sure me reflexes are not as good as they were a few years ago and I certainly don't have the time that I did years ago. I was actually shocked looking at the scoreboards on MOH, some people must have been putting in 20 hrs a day, crazy amounts.

I picked on FPS games as these used to be my favourite games, maybe as suggested I wont force myself to play them if I'm not enjoying them. I actually just played/finished Enslaved on the PS3 and really enjoyed it, also tried the Gothic IV demo and although not the best game it was quite relaxing.. The problem is it seems the games that get the most hype are the FPS ones and it's hard not falling for it.

In the meantime, casual/non competitive gaming is probably a good idea.. well apart from racing games as I still love those :)
