Recently, as in the past few weeks, my Maxtor dimondmax 10 s-ata has been much louder than it ever has been before during idle and when seaking. Also it has frozen and not recognised the drive when rebooting.

Basically as wondering whether you guys think its going to go down shortly/ is it time to get a replacement (had it less than 8 months). Using it as a OS / storage

If it's only 8 months old get it replaced under warranty.
Try a Maxtor disk util to test the drive for errors and change the acoustic settings to make it quieter

The drive went down this morning. When I turn it on, it starts to make a clicking grinding sound every second or so.
Just had to be the morning of the delievery of my new 7200.10s
