Current spec;

I7-9700k @ 4.9ghz
32Gb Corsair DDR4 @ 3000mhz
GigaByte Z390 UD
Asus Dual Geforce 4070
Various 970 EVO SSDs

I've been running this build since about 2019, other than swapping the 2070 for a 4070 and replacing the SSD's. It's served me very well, as the CPU as been excellent, running at 4.9 on air with very little in the way of fan noise.

CPU's have come a long way since, but has the shift been major enough to bother upgrading? I am rarely CPU bound as my gaming tends to lean on the VR side of things (Typically DCS) but conscious core usage doesn't always tell the entire story.

Would likely retain the GPU at this time, but any suggestions on what to base a solid upgrade on?

Thanks

If you don't feel that you need it, then I'd just wait. CPUs will only get better.

If you do want to upgrade, the gaming CPU of choice is the 7800X3D, we're still waiting for the 9800X3D.

stick with your current setup if you are mainly doing V R you're not cpu bound , and the performance is good enough for your liking, i don't see the sense in upgrading if you are enjoying what you are doing right now, you're just scratching the upgrade itch, save the money and be one of the first to get get the 9800x3d later on if you really care about cpus, or g
how hot is your cpu running? maybe get better cooling and push for 5ghz, or more:p

I have been looking at this for the past week (I have a very similar system), and I can't find anything about the upgrade that would be *significantly* better than I already have.

Disk IO isn't improved. The time it would take to do things isn't *significantly* faster, and games wouldn't run much faster either as I game at 4K and get awesome FPS as it is (80+) at high or max settings.

If you're happy with performance that you already have, then as above, save the money unless you just want to get the latest hardware. As it is, I'm now waiting to see what the 9950X3D looks like, which will be some time next year.

Is your GPU pegged at 100% usage?

I would suspect that your overall FPS would increase a bit.
But more significantly, the minimum FPS would have a bigger jump, the end result is that the games feel subjectively smoother despite the lack of a significant FPS increase.
(At least, that has been my experience when I've done a significant CPU upgrade after a few years)
