Time to sort my speaker cabling out...

Irrelevant of the top part being tripe, the advice of using 13A mains cable is just excellent advice :)

Ok yes, i admit - after doing some research it seems using cat5 for speaker cables is possible - using all 8 cores. But i still don't really see why you'd want to, all you need is lots of thick copper.

You use more than one run of cat5 for each run, braiding them as you go. The result is an astonishingly good cable, despite the relatively high capacitance.

Relative time cost vs 13A mains flex would be up to you though :)
 
So can anyone tell me.... Does CAT5 exhibit properties other cables will not (i.e. harshness at the top) or is that wrong?
