Time to Upgrade from a Core 2 Duo?

I upgraded my from a Q6600 a couple of weeks ago to an I7 2600k and 8gb of RAM, nothing was struggling with the Q6600 but everything is a lot faster now.
It's loading times that were doing my head in, once I got in game everything was playable, just getting there was becoming a chore, especially on newer stuff.

Thanks for this!

Have either of you put this processor on a UEFI motherboard? Is UEFI a big improvement on standard BIOS?

Hello,

Back in 2006, I started this thread: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17622901

I have a Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4Ghz

I'm thinking of building a new PC, but would like to know if I can look forward to a decent performance boost from the effort. The machine is for FPS gaming and photography processing.

For info - between this build and now, I fitted a Radeon 5770.

Cheers!

Slightly open-ended question mate, seeing as you've not mentioned budget.

If budget allows, then Z68 with i7-2600k for your photo processing and whatever gpu suits your gaming needs. Also get an SSD for read/write speeds that you could never imagine before.
See my rig for reference.
Also if you use photoshop, see here. Test yours against the other rigs in the thread. Then you'll comprehend the difference.
Hope it helps. :)

UEIF, the only noticeable difference is the fast "POST" time, seems you press the power button and within a couple of seconds windows is loading. (Oh yeah, it is pretty too)

The exact same route I am taking, E6600>2500k as funds allow. The only part I am struggling with is spending £150ish on a board....there must be some tech on them these days, thing is I don't want to XF or SLI or OC to a huge extreme, maybe something with 'auto' on it, point being I don't want to pay for tech on a mobo that I will not use.

I'd definitely go for a Z68 board if i were you.
The one i got is excellent.
Although there is no coax spdif, which buggers me up a little for my speaker system, but a great one click overclocking board. My cpu went up to 4.7GHz with one click.
Also, if you can't afford a decent gpu right now, the Z68 boards have onboard graphics which are pretty good tbh.

Ah! Wicked! I like ASUS boards! Thanks!

I have the pro version of that board with bluetooth, unless that is the same board just without the word pro on the end.
One of the easiest boards I've ever used.

Have you considered overclocking the CPU a bit?? An E6600 at around 3GHZ to 3.2GHZ should be still fine for the time being.

I would also wait a bit longer as AMD Bulldozer is being released next month and Sandy Bridge E soon after.

My E6600 runs fine at 3.06 any higher and its unstable, its been fine for about 2yrs at this, however I purchased a new 6950gpu from OC about a week ago..and since this constant lockups in gaming, hell even the old BSOD shows its ugly face, but this is for another thread when I have exhausted all my options.....this is why I am looking at upgrading to SB, hopefully its my CPU bottlenecking/conflicting that is causing my lockups....plus I will need to for BF3 also.

I imagine someone has already said "Did you check your PSU can handle a 6950?" ... but I'll ask anyway, just in case :)

That said I couldn't be doing with "just" a dual core as my main desktop anymore, so don't count that as discouragement to upgrade. Cat is right above though when he points out the bulldozer launch is very close and should shave some prices!

erm just my 2c but board wise the asus maximus-iv gene z might be worth a look. Its sub £150 and it's got a lot of options. It your going to be overclocking then this is definitely worth a look in. You could pay out a lot more for less considering what the maximus has to offer.
