Time to upgrade from a i7 920...

Its that time again where i look at my system again and think "is it time to upgrade?"

Currently have a i7 920 d0 with a very mild over clock.
6gb dd3.
GTX680.

I game at 1080p and for the most part this system is fine for stuff i am playing, Elite Dangerous, The Forest, Diablo 3 etc. I will be playing Fallout 4 and Possibly Starwars Battlefront when that lands so theres an element of looking forward with this potential upgrade.

My current MB only supports pcie 2.0 so i am missing out on a bit of performance from my graphics card. Also i would quite like to condense the size of my machine down to M atx or M itx, theres no need anymore for a huge case full of drives as i have a little HP server doing all the storing of stuffs.

I was considering Skylake as its new out and bang upto date. I could stretch to a I7 but if possible would like opinions (or fact) on how the I5's shape up compared to my current I7 and also any pitfalls i might have going forward with a I5. The I5 is obviously going to be cheaper and free up some wedge to spend elsewhere.

Alternatively i could stick with my currently rig and live with its beastly size and buy another ssd for games (have on for os) and get some proper water cooling for it and see how far i can overclock it.

So anyway, opinions? What are peoples thoughts? Anything i have overlooked or not considered?

You are not getting any appreciable slowdown with Gen2 PCIe.

If I were you I would try to get that CPU running at 4-4.2 GHz if you can, it's still pretty potent. I personally wouldn't spend a lot on a full WC setup for an aging board, but an AIO would do well.

If you switch to anything other than an x99 system you'll lose a lot of PCIe lanes as well. Having said that if you're not interested in SLI (Which looks to be the case with you only having a single GTX680), you don't need a X99 platform anyway.

I only went from a 920 D0 to SB-E because my 920 was dying. It did 4GHz for a couple of years though.

Not worth upgrading the CPU just for gaming you wont see much benefit :)

Look at upgrading your GPU instead to something like a 980 or 980ti.

we love i7 920. you are forbidden to upgrade it.. upgrade gpu.. maybe add some more ram, replace with 12gb , get another SSD..

my i7 is overclocked at 3.5, but still nothing uses it above 65%

I'm in same boat.

My asus p6t keeps kicking my drives off, very bad for anything when running 5 drives and can cause loss.

As such I'm ditching the rig, but skylake is a waste of money, the performance gain from haswell is minimal.

It's served me for a good few years so I'm happy. Grabbing i7 4890k, 16gb ram and eventually 980ti.

As others have said...the CPU itself is fine but motherboards for that chipset are expensive so thought better to upgrade.

Good news though if you have 1366 lots of cpu coolers can be used with 1150.. I'm reusing my antec 620 kuhler

Cheers for the opinions! Its mad that a cpu from 2008 is still holding its own now. Seems the general consensus is keep it and to be fair that makes sense. I might as well get a second ssd and look to overclock it further before throwing money at what could be a small upgrade in terms of performance.
