Time to upgrade my monitor for gaming

That is fair enough, IPS panels are better, but for the Ops budget, an IPS panel is not an option and never was so no point confusing the matter.

Sounds like you used a pretty **** TN panel too.

The tech has improved somewhat since the early days.

instead of makign a new thread, ive been looking into a 24inch screen too but what sort of graphics card would be enough to run current games on fairly high settings?
would a 5850 be up to the job?

Most of the 120hz TN panel monitors I've seen are pretty poor. Terrible backlight bleed, really narrow viewing angles, and the 6 bit colour makes dark scenes and video compression look awful. Glossy screens may look nice in a store, but I prefer my screens to be non-reflective so I can actually see what's on the screen!

Personally I wouldn't go for anything except an IPS panel due to the true colour reproduction and wide viewing angles. After using my Dell 2209WA for a couple of years TN panels look so poor to me now. I hate it when the viewing angle is so narrow that the top of a web page is darker than the bottom!

But as you can't really get 120hz monitors with IPS panels it is a choice between the 2.

If fact, what is the cheapest IPS panel at 23"/24" - I believe it will be out of budget for the OP.

So what your saying is not much use...

Personally, i would be happy with a 5850 for any res of 1080 or under tbh. It will play every game on "fairly high settings" as you put it. i had a 5850 until recently and it played pretty much everythng at highest settings at 1900x1080 on my TV.

The only things i found it struggled on were The Witcher 2 where i had to turn off Ubersampling and use 4xAA but still had everything else maxed, and also Crysis with mods, without mods it handled Crysis very well at highest settings. It did struggle a tiny bit on Civ V as well.

BTW i have since upgraded to a 6950 which has destroyed everything so far. I haven't had to turn down a single setting on anything

PS i don't suppose refresh has any impact when considering graphics cards does it?

I can't imaging getting a monitor of this size but not having the best resolution you can get...

I was referring to the 22" 3D samsung... I just forgot the quote.

Not really.

Would rather have a slightly lower resolution and a 16:10 ratio, 16:9 would send me nuts.

Besides, at 22", 1680x1050, I dont think the performance hit is worth 1080p on such a small display.
