Time to upgrade - new PSU needed?

So I'm currently planning a new build, along the lines of this:

But am debating whether I should get a new PSU. My current one is an Enermax Noisetaker 600W, which is probably already borderline insufficient considering I have 6 hard drives. Also, it's over 4 years old.

How much wattage do you kind folk think I'd need if I do this upgrade? The 480 is supposedly rather power hungry, but presumably still less so than 470 SLIs? Am I maybe better off getting a gtx 5xx?

Thanks!

As Stu said, GTX480 is still a great card, if a little hot, and as you mentioned a bit of a power hog.

The power supply linked would run it fine, as would I'm sure yours. But as it is getting on a bit it might not be worth the risk (even if Enermax do make the best PSUs out there).

What are you using PC for? If its for gaming, then 4GB of RAM is more than enough, and the i7 2600K is pointless over the i5 2500k - comparison here.

I've only just noticed this about the XFX Pro 650W, for only £5 more you can actually get the XFX Pro 750W.

If you can afford the extra fiver, which I'm assuming you can if you're willing to splash a grand on a new rig, then surely go for the 750W for the added comfort of knowing you've got plenty.

Thanks guys - agreed that 4 years is getting on a bit, probably worth replacing it now while I'm in a money-spending mood :)

The PC will be used primarily for gaming, as well as programming (but nothing too heavyweight) - cheers for the tip on the i5 2500k, I think I'll take it. I always get the feeling I need more memory though, I've been using 4gigs for the last couple of upgrades, and my physical memory usage is always up in the 80%+ region, and with the amount I like to multitask surely 8gigs is worth it?

I've been pondering which gfx card to get for a while now, but the deal on the 480 is indeed too tasty to pass up. My other consideration was getting 2x 470s (under 300 quid with that other awesome deal), but getting a 2nd 480 further down the line sounds like a better idea. And no way am I splashing out for a 580.

Did you know that you need the pro version of the motherboard ideally for sli/crossfire?

for GTX480 in sli you need a 850w+ psu.

for GTX470 you need a 750w

anyone know how good the OCUK 850's are? need one for 480GTX SLI

Not good enough, I bet they can only output a low 600w in reality, most cheap nasty psu's are like that, the wattage rating tends to be a figure plucked from thin air.

do you want a Modular or normal cable psu?
