q9650 running at 3.8ghz how much better for 'gaming' will these nee ivy chips be? Which one is the sweet spot? not looked at cpu's in ages.

Anandtech comparisons put the 3770k pretty much twice the speed of core 2 quads when both CPUs are at stock.
Stock Q9650 = 3GHz
Stock 3770k = 3.5GHz
Q9650 @ 3.8 ~ +27%
So to get *roughly* double performance... you'd be wanting to overclock a 3770k to 4.4-4.5GHz
I'm moving from a Q6600 @ 3.6 to a 3770k... ordered early Sunday morning by I'm in Sweden this week, so delivery isn't happening til Saturday for me... itching to tweak

I see there are some low wattage CPUI's coming are there going to be the overclocking kings?

Not any of the ones I've seen. All of the IBs on OCUK site are not overclockable... with the exception of the 3570k and 3770k.
