Time to upgrade :)

Hiya all got some free cash to upgrade about £400 (ish)
the down side is i havent upgraded in a while and theres a lot of different options sockets/etc my current system is a Athlon XP2500 running at 2.3Ghz a Radeon 9800Pro and 2x512mb Geil Dimms DDR I was wondering if any of you could shead some light on what my best options to upgrade.

my current systems doing fine really apart from the motherboards an Epox 8RDA and the capacitors are leaking :( ah well good excuse for an upgrade :D

Ah dawm so I cant use my current memory :( should have stated already got a good psu and really want to stay clear of MSI stuff :)

just noticed looks like IDE has just about vanished is there any boards I can atleast connect my 2 new 160gb IDE hard drives too ..and possibly cd rom lol?

As far as I know you will need a new PSU for PCI-E motherboards unless yours supports that. With AMD AM2 socket you will need DDR2 unfortunately but if you want to keep you existing RAM then you can go for socket 939. The prices are roughly the same with socket 939 being slightly more expensive. I'm sure all motherboards still have IDE connections.
 
The power supplys a Tagan 480w unit (forgot the model) looking around looks like socket 939 could vanish long before AM2 does would it still be a good choice to go the 939 route?

It would be cheaper for you to go the 939 route because you could use your existing RAM. I wouldn't worry about 939 vanishing any time soon. If your PSU supports ATX 2.0 then it will work with PCI-E.


EDIT: You can buy ATX 24pin to 20pin converters so that normal PSU's will work with PCI-E.

If you don't need a PSU then that means more money towards the goods. I managed to get a dual core in!

Hmm i like the dual core idea also like the look of the mainboard too just been reading up reviews and also looks like its possible for me to run my existing ram too :) any idea if i would get much of an overclock on a spec like that?
