HI. i have a computer i built 6 years ago(wow) but have upgrading stuff on it like my ram(64gb now) and gpu(2080 ti)

IT has a core i7 5820k cpu clocked at 4ghz watercooled.

Is this cpu holding back my gpu in terms of gaming?

It does seem to get a bit slugggish when editing 42mp photos in lightroom cc so i am wondering if this is the issue?

I also use a 4k monitor so i assume me playin games at 4k may bottlekneck due to my cpu?

If i do upgrade, when will gen 2 of threadrippers come out that has USB 4 and at least 3 nvme gen 4 slots?

my mobo only had one nvme(shocked as its 6 years old) and only started using that recently as my main os drive(so that in itself was another upgrade i done)

exciting times

For gaming at 4K I wouldn't bother, if you need more oomph for work related tasks a 3900/3950X or Threadripper would be a good investment.

We should see Zen 3 this year on AM4, I'm not sure when the next Threadripper chips will launch though.

If you sold your current motherboard and CPU you could pick up a 3900 and decent X570 (or B550 when they launch) for around £400-450 from looking at current OCUK prices. You'd double your core and thread count if nothing else, should make a very healthy difference for your work related tasks.

This is a good read.

Edit: This is a more modern review than the one I initially listed, has TR and the new Intel chips included, as well as the 3950X: https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/a...ore-X-10000-vs-AMD-Threadripper-3rd-Gen-1626/

Ahh ok so it's purely gpu dependant at that stage
Depends on game.
Naturally old games aren't hungry for cores and lots of games/game engines have been made in "Four cores is high end" Intel stagnation era.
Those won't care about six or eight cores at all.
And then there's good old Crysis, which is almost single threaded and hence even the best CPUs can't get consistently hyigh framerates in it.

There are now some games which scale to 8 cores and more (like AC Odyssey) to run best.
Also with next-gen consoles bringing non-boosting variant of Ryzen 3700X as base line for next-gen games need for cores is likely to increase fast in heavier games.
And then there's Star Citizen which can give good workout for 12c/24t and without SMT majority of cores would be fully occupied.
Maybe also Crysis Remastered does same for multicore what original does for single core.

But 3840x2160 is lots of pixels to render (+ very few high Hz monitors) and would need cutting settings for graphics card to have enough horse power for high refresh rates.
Though maybe next-gen coming in fall starts to be good for it.
AMD might aim to release improved (not rebranded) Zen3 CPUs at same time with graphics cards.

sweet ok cool

star citizen is indeed a game i play and wondering if my cpu is bottlenecking the game.

Then again, by the time it actually releases even in a beta state, ryzon 10 will be out, the first 2nm 5ghz 24 core cpu
