Times Square

If you want to be within easy walking distance you will simply have to pay that sort of figure. I went there at the end of last year and there was hardly anything below the sort of figure you have quoted, let alone much below. 5* for £200, youve gotta be joking.

I was in NY earlier this year and my sister stayed at Hotel Pennsylvania for a night, it was cheap, $100 or so. Its a HUGE hotel, 1700 rooms, and is just down the road from Time Square.

Speaking of which, what is the point of Time Square? We checked it out one night and it was just big bright billboards and loads of people there looking around at each other. Grand Central Station on the other hand was very impressive.

There's nothing wrong with the subway. It's air conditioned in most carriages, it's $30 for a 7 day pass (that covers bus travel too) that covers the entire tri-state area, and you can NOT get anywhere in Manhattan on foot in 30 minutes. It may feel like that because there's so much to see, but I can assure you that's NOT the case.

Don't be afraid to stay anywhere in Manhattan (even as far as Morningside Heights on the upper-west side) because it's dead easy to get anywhere you like using public transport.

Just checked it out for 2 nights.

$544. Thats $272 a night. Almost 3 times what you thought

What a daft post. You don't know the dates that he went therefore how can you compare? I just did a search and it's costing me $109 a night. That's almost 3 times less than what you thought :eeek:.

What a daft post.

Not as daft as yours? I just thought I'd point out that at almost $300 a night the OP might be somewhat dissapointed when he pops over expecting $100

I've tried 4 different sets of dates - $544 was the cheapest for a 2 night stay.

I stayed at Hilton Garden Inn Times SQ which was fine, maybe don't be so tight on location as Times Square isn't really anything special

I stayed at westin times square in march 2008 for... $200 a night, those were the days. It was £1=$2 too.

shame u want to keep it cheap, i highly recommend the w times square, you literally step out of the hotel into times square.

really nice hotel, we stayed in a king wonderful room for the week.

I stayed there, the screened bathroom cubicle thing they had going on were weird:o

Why don't you take a picture of yourself with a Kodak and then take your life from negative to positive and let everyone know that.

(Doubt anyone will get that)

If you're on a budget, then it'll be cheaper away from times square. The Subway is fantastic and really cheap as has been pointed out.

Agree that times square isn't that exciting. Going up the empire state building, boat trip to ellis island and seeing the firestation where they filmed ghostbusters however is highly recommended.

So many better places to visit than time square, its noisy and other than shops and billboards not much going on.

Get the train about its easy and new yorkers are actually really helpful if you look at all lost.

I had a nice stay at the Millennium Hilton near wall Street and is right next to a tube station

Yeah as mentioned if you're on a budget stay a bit further away. I've been twice, the first time I stayed at Fresh Hostel up on W95 street, was about $30 a night, a couple of blocks from the subway which was about 6 stops from Times Square.

The second time I stayed at The Wellington which is next to Carnegie Hall, you can walk to Times Square in about 15 to 20 mins. I paid £550 for flight and accomodation for 4 nights there in March.

If I go again I'd look to stay around the west/greenwich village, so much nicer than the hustle and bustle of Times Square, better places to eat/drink etc.
