To be fair to the OP, it's depressingly easy to buy a rubbish tin opener... I swear they're usually designed by folk who never opened a tin in their lives. Took me three purchases (starting with the good old fashioned cheapo type) to find one that was half decent last time. Can't remember where the current one came from though, thankfully. Means it's been working without a struggle for quite a long time.It just a tin opener ffs...
I have this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Culinare-M...d=1&keywords=tin+opener&qid=1605176631&sr=8-5 - works a treat on the odd occasion it is needed now.
Kuhn rikon open up tins leaving zero sharp edges. You can run your finger along it and it won't even scratch you.
Other tin openers will leave you squirting blood everywhere so not all tin openers are equal.
Really helpful if you are accident prone or stupid, have never cut myself on a tin
I had one of them and got rid for the reason you mentioned, was literally useless if cans had dents in them. Wouldn't touch two cans of custard last Christmas day and ended up hammering a screwdriver in to the lids to open them. Replaced it with a cheap Oxo can opener and it munches cans for breakfast.I have a Kuhn Rikon tin opener. There's a bit of a nack to it but it opens cans really neatly. However it won't open a tin if there's the slightest hint of a dent in the rim. So I also have a cheapo Wilko's one as well.
