Can anyone enlighten me as to why the Corsair XMS2 6400 C4 I'm using has 4-4-4-12 on the labels but the mobo uses 5-5-5-18 as standard in auto mode?

Thanks

The SPD is programmed to 5-5-5-18 but you should change the settings in the BIOS to the correct ones and alter the voltage. This is the same for most high end memory.

yep, Corsairs are famous for that. Ignore the SPD, manually set and make sure the voltage is sufficient.

It's a shame they don't tell people that's the case, would save a lot of hassle.

They do it because the modules need more Vdimm than the mobos give at default. When DDR2 first came out there were issues with performance RAM not booting on some boards as they weren't giving enough Vdimm, so you had to put a cheapo stick in, manually set Vdimm then shutdown and swap in the performance RAM.

My 4GB OCZ kit defaults to PC5300 speeds but is rated at PC6400.

I see, so you guys are saying that I need to go into the bios and change timings and up the vdimm to 2.1v?

Thank you

Set the timings in the BIOS to 4-4-4 and it should be fine. You probably won't need to increase the vdimm at stock, but if you want to overclock you'll need to up it as you go.

if its performance memory you will need to increase the vdimm to the voltage there rated at or it will be undervolted and not run at the rated timings/speed

Ok here we go again. I have been trying and failing to OC my rig for the last month now. And yet again adjusting the setting gives me looping or BSOD. With the bios at ALL stock settings, I changed the RAM to the rated 2.1v and the timing to 4-4-4-12 as it says on the website and the side of the RAM. Woo Hoo BSOD. Whatever I do I can't win and more to the point Memtest running overnight fails to detect any issues.
