Right getting conflicting information, was out riding and was blinded by the sun. so figured I would order a tinted visor.

Now being told I can't use it. It does say "Day time use only" and plan on keeping my clear visor on with me.

But it seem strange to not be allowed to protect your eyes from the sun?

It seems really grey area, they seem to class the visor as the same as a screen on the car and having a tinted one is permanent. But you can wear sunglasses because you can remove them, even though visors are quick release.

Wasn't as if I was going to go out at night it in, was going to use it for when its really sunny.

Not sure on the offical stance, but from what I find.. police around here are fine with black tinted visors but pretty hot on iridium visors (the coloured mirror ones), which is stupid as they do the same thing!

I have worn a full race tinted black visor for 4 years now and never been pulled.

i got pulled for a black visor, best buy cheap pair of sunglasses, that way they wont have a reason to pull you over, plus you wont look so stupid ;)

Tinted visors are fine during the day, as long as they're not stamped with 'not for road use'.

Iridium are illegal as you cant see back through them.
I think the issue is being able to see back through the visor from outside?

Generally always carry a clear one in case you meet an arsey copper though!

My visor is very dark, can't really see thought it from the outside at all. I always however carry a clear visor, incase I do get pulled my a copper, that way, you should be fine.

I pretty much always use a tinted visor in the day. If I know I'm going to be out after dark I'll carry my clear one also.

Police shouldn't have a problem so long as u aren't wearing it in the dark :)

If your bike is legal then you are exceptionally unlikely to be done for a tinted visor. Always carry your clear one and make sure that you swap before sundown (for safeties sake as much as legal).

As said they are illegal to use, same as tinted screens forward of the a-pillar. It's also not just night time, but if dark clouds roll in, or whatever.

It's why a lot of helmets now comme with a secondary flo down sun visor.
Carry the clear one with you, don't act like a Twonk and don't have an illegal bike like loud exhaust and it's unlikely you'll get issues from a cop. But relies its still technically wrong.

I second this.

Traditionally tinted visors (or anything else which isn't clear and permanent) weren't legal for road use (in the flipped down position). Wearing sunglasses under your helmet is legal and I have always used helmets with an internal secondary tinted visor.

The fact people may have worn tinted/iridium visors for years and never been stopped or done is irrelevant and has no reflection on what the law actually says.

I believe recently the law has changed and permits the use of 25-50% tinted visors (bearing an approved manufacturers mark) during daylight hours only.

From another bikers forum;

This is the official police stance.................

"Any visor with a light transmission rate of less than 50% is deemed to be not UK road legal. A typical dark tint and iridium visor has between 40% to 20% light transmission rates. A standard road legal tinted visor has a 50% transmission rate.

In the latest police guideline report this is the following recommendation to all England, Wales and Northern Ireland forces

“Tinted visors, if used during daylight hours, advice only, if used during the hours of darkness or conditions of reduced visibility consider prosecution using ‘Tintman’ equipment where available.

It is acknowledged that there is much debate about this issue and many variables and anomalies can be applied. Therefore a pragmatic approach is necessary and only in cases where there is an obvious danger should prosecution be considered”

So in my opinion on the road the best option is a helmet with flip down tinted visor as you don't need to carry a spare clear one, you can flip it without having to stop and you won't any hassle off the boys in blue. While on the track go for an iridium one which also makes your bike faster :D

Well its going back, as the misses noticed at the bottom of the bag it came in a yellow warning card saying its not suitable for the country I am in, wish they had said that on the site before I bought it :(

I have a specific pair of shades I wear when on my Chopper.

Anyway, Last time I looked about for helmets they were selling a few with a Fighter pilot pull down visor built in, Uber cool if you ask me.

I have had Caberg lids for a few years now and find the internal flip down visor much better than having the hassle of carrying an extra visor.

Ive got the Justisimo flip helmet, looks great on paper but its really heavy and very noisey, even with ear plugs! The flip down visor is cool though.

I now wear a KBC VR-1X and that without plugs is still quieter than the Caberg with plugs.

Have a tinted visor I bought with it and carry a clear one if im out for the day, touring then ill make room in the luggage for the clear one!

:D

I use a pinlock protecTint insert out of winter months, it's light sensitive so changes tint as needed. It's really good as it goes from maybe 5-10% up to about 30% which is fine for the UK. When I'm commuting in the winter I just use a clear one as I'm driving at night half the time.

My sun visor isn't blue though, don't know why it appears blue in the photo.
