Howdy all,

I'm not sure if such a thing exists, but if it does I'm sure you guys will know bout it.

I have a Netgear DG834N router at the moment which as Im sure you are aware has 4 ethernet ports on it. Well I have a 8 port Netgear switch as well, which resides in another room connecting numerous other ethernet devices to it.

Well the DG834N has all 4 ports in use, but I have 5 items in the same room I want to connect to it, so without getting a long cable to connect the device to the switch in the other room, is there such thing as a small switch or ethernet port adaptor I can add to the router?

I don't want another 5 port switch, so Im hoping something small exists that I could say plug into one port on the DG834N that will turn that one port into 2?

Btw, making this 5th item wireless is not an option, I want it to use a Ethernet cable.

Any help will be appreciated!

ta

Steve

Not in the way you want I'm affraid.

You can indeed use one bit of Cat5 to connect two devices (100Mbit only requires 2 pairs of wires, Cat5 has 4 pairs total).

What you can't do is connect two devices into one switch port, so your only option is to buy another small 5 port switch and run things from that.

Doh, ok it will have to be a cheapo switch then.

Thanks wij, your an abundance of knowledge as usual!
