I actually got into quite an argument with my dad about this last night.

he is quite adamant that one should only tip silver service...

my attitude is that i'll drop a fiver if the service is good and 15% if the waitress is fit and flirts. base, I know but I'm a fan of simple pleasures...

six of us went to wagamamas last night (my first visit to the newcastle one. much recommended) and had a great meal with much laughing at my parents' lack of chopstick skills.

our waitress was a very cute european girl called laura (ordinarily, I'd place the accent as italian but she kept slipping into a slight french accent...looks wise, italian...)

anyway, end of the meal, paid cash and tucked a folded twenty into her pocket.

when we got outside, my dad nearly flipped...

so tipping...do you round it up, save it for certain places or do you base it on the person waiting...?

What gets to me is the increasing number of places that automatically add a service charge onto the bill, which I think is a bit presumptious. I guess the thought behind this is your less likely to ask to have i removed (which of course you are entitled to do) or have it reduced. I'm sure through this method some unknowing customers also double tip, not realising it's already included.
 
I tip very very rarely in this country. Penski I agree with your Dad. Slipping that bird a 20 was just wasting money (unless of course it got you a date, then its worth every penny).
 
I've actually been tippid by the waiter once in silent protest to my tightness. I goes to this restaurant once a week and always seem to get the same guy. He is so inept he'll never get a thing from me. Luckily I can see the kitchen from where I usaully sit, just making sure he doesn't spit into my food :D
 
10% unless they were inept.
I tend to round up deliveries to the next pound.

Taxi drivers are another story - they generally get whatever I have to hand so I probably tip far too much! :p
 
Minimum 10% regardless of restaurant.

If the waitress is friendly/flirtly/helpful/funny etc, then more.

I have given nothing on a couple of occasions, but only when the service sucked hard.
 
I'm a student so the tip is normally the remaining change from the amount paid.

i.e. Total is £16.30, puts down £17 and they can keep the 70p change :D

I have huge problems with it.

When I was a lot younger, I worked in a bar/club that had a restaurant. Everyone was on the same wage (minimum).

Now those of us on the bar worked, hard. You would at any one time have 50 people baying for your service, shouting at you, saying "I'M NEXT!" and trying to prioritise the lot of them whilst fending off a nervous breakdown.

Over in the restaurant, they served people plates of food and sat there between courses.

Now in the restaurant, the workers would regularly come home with plates full of tips just for doing their job. In the bar, you'd have to offer fellatio to the clientelle to come home with £3 for the night.

Why is it we feel duty bound to tip some minimum wage workers as opposed to others?

Luckily these days my salary blows what I had then out of the water but it does make me wonder. You don't give the checkout girl a bit extra for herself, do you?
 
I tip 10% if the service has been good. Nothing if it's been bad.

But I'd never be so sleazy as to slip a twenty into a waitress's pocket. What were you thinking? She's not a lap-dancer.
 
I'll always tip if I think I've had good service.

I took the kids to a restuarant recently and although the waitress was nice and smiled and everything. The food was that slow in coming we were there two and a half hours and didn't even have a sweet. I don't think she was expecting anything mind, she didn't even charge me for the drinks.
