I'm talking postman, milkman, bin men, pool cleaner etc

Just wonder who tips at Christmas, how much and to whom?

Previous yeas I've just left a tenner in an envelope stuck to the front door for the postman. But this year my post hasn't turned up until the afternoon and I've noticed it's not the usual guy at the moment (probably a temp) so I'm not sure how to go about it this year. I also normally give £20 to the bin men.

Tips are fine if you get to know the people or there service is great to you but I would only tip for those reasons.

In my old flat I used to have a different postman/women each week and they were all at different times so never gave them a tip. Also the bin men picked up the bins after I went to work so never saw them ...no tip there. Milk man never had one but If it was the same dude his tip would have been the work out he got walking up all the stairs with no lift haha.

And as for the pool man he never came to clean my 3rd floor pool extended out of my window ever. ha ha

the postman this year wont get anything off me, talk about crap service
post int he summer was around 2-3 pm even rmsd items were the same
since the snow hit ive had to go pick up the mail from the sorting office yet the "posh" end got there mail fine!

saved myself £20 there

ive tipped the postman for the past 4 years aswell but this new one is just stupid, he does half of my street then buggers off for dinner then does the other half wtf!

paper girl , local fresh farm produce delivery man and binman will get £20 tho (bin man took loads of stuff he should have earlier int he year for me saved me a trip to the skip and also sorted out a bigger wheelie bin too) and the paper girl always drops the local rag off at around 4pm straight after school and i know she only gets £12 a week for it
and the veg man isnt scared of the snow and will come on other days when i need extra stuff for work ;)

I’ll give the paperboy something and might do the same for the milkman. The rest can go for a walk as they don’t provide us with anything special.

Tipping the bin men?

You trippin' bro!

My parents do where I live.

I think last year my Mum left the tip just inside the lid of one of the bins. She said one of them let up a loud "Wahoo!" when he spotted it.

At the end of the day, it's no different to tipping the Barman in a busy bar. They remember you tipped them and will go to you before serving those who didn't.

Thus if you tip your binmen, they will tend to do right by you and give you good service because they know you tip.

I must be insane, I see no possible way that tipping the bin men can improve the service of them wheeling my bin to a machine, pressing a button and wheeling it back again. Furthermore the bin men (around here at least) are on a very good wage considering how unspecialised the role is, there's a waiting list for those positions.

Tipped the old bin men we had each year, then they changed our bin collection day 8 weeks ago and i've only had 2 collections since plus a stand up argument in our close with one of the new bin men when i told him he had missed half the bins on the street (hadnt bothered to look around the corner) and he told me to **** off as it wasnt his ******* problem! Nice!

Postie always gets a tip, she's ace, always nice and early, tries a few times to deliver parcels each day and is just generally pleasant. Same with window cleaner, always good for a laugh does a top job and fills me in on the local gossip (who got burgled, which housewife he saw in the buff etc)

While I agree they probably do less than some other services in that respect, there are times when it can works in your favor. For example the local council has a rule on overfilled bins, yet they will let this slide so to speak. I believe they have also sometimes wheeled the bins back up the drive, and its a long drive.

I suppose on a more detailed note is the Postman.
They tip him because he will put stuff in a safe spot if we are not in, or knows who to speak to at the neighbors to deliver something etc...

why would you tip them.
A) we have minimum wage
B) it's not like a waiter who can make or break your evening.

It's basically a Xmas present I'm talking here.
It's not like you tip services every week.

I'm pretty sure it's actually got a fairly long history of giving back to others at Xmas.

Standard service, you can set up a safe place with rm and all postmen will try and leave parcels at neighbours.

where you draw the line, how about all the other services you pay for, do you tip 200+ people?

Just seems totally bizarre to me.
