Tips for Homeplug users

Thanks for that informative link . . . reading that article does prompt the question "Why bother?" - damp string might be a better bet :(

I still believe that FTP & RJ45 cabling trumps everything :)

I have a pair of the XE102's (bought new from auction) and they are usless can't get em running at all.

I have a pair of Devolo 200Mbps HomePlug adapters I use to connect my WD TV Live to my network and they've always worked well.

I've also installed them for several customers to replace dodgy wireless connections and haven't had any problems.

If a hard wired connection isn't an option they're a good alternative. I've certainly found them to be more reliable than a lot of the wireless kit I've had to deal with.

I've got a pair of 85Mb/s ones, no problem streaming 720p to my HTPC (despite being connected to a 50" plasma which the article indicates might degrade the signal)

I keep thinking about dropping the cash for a 200Mb/s kit, to let me stream 1080p smoothly, but the decent kits are so expensive that I'll probably just run an RJ45 through the attic instead.

Another vote for Devolo AV 200s. Wireless just won't work in my parents' flat - too many other WLANs and solid walls but a pair of Devolos work perfectly.

Got 3 TP-Link 200 Mbit ones and 2 Devolo 200 Mbit ones and they interoperate perfectly.

Have 1 TP-Link in the lounge with a switch plugged into it and then a PS3, a Wii and a laptop for media usage all going into the switch. Have 1 devolo in the boiler cupboard along with the router (this is where the master socket is) and that just plugs into the router.

Then there is 1 in each of the 3 bedrooms.

The whole thing works flawlessly, I can stream on the PS3 from a NAS connected directly to the router, everyything sees everything else (I find this amazing when you consider all the traffic has to go through the single Devolo adaptor plugged into the router) and on sustained transfer between any device on the network, I see between 6 and 7 MB/s (depending on what else is going on), which I work out to be between 48 Mb/s and 56 Mb/s.

Perhaps its because I live in a single storey flat that is less than 5 years old, but I couldn't be more impressed with the tech.

Aside from ensuring none of them are plugged into a surge protector (I didn't even consider that one, it seemed pretty obvious), we really haven't done anything special. Wherever possible, we have given an adaptor its own socket, but even that hasn't been possible everywhere, like the one that plugs into the router, which is on a 4 way extension!

Whether I would see as good performance if I lived in a normal house with perhaps slightly older wiring, I imagine not. But in the right conditions they are such a superior option to WiFi (what we were using before) it's untrue!

Anyone have a linky for the Devolo 200Mbit ones?
& whats the next version up? to get HD streaming etc or will the 200Mbit ones do?

I wonder whether Homeplug works better in some houses than others - dependent on what other equipment is plugged in and in use (e.g. fridges, microwaves, food processors, power tools, vacuum cleaners, etc.) - and on the age, topology, ELCBs, RCDs and general quality of the wiring

Can your neighbours plug in a Homeplug and share your broadband connection
