Tips for Homeplug users

My main PC is in the conservatory which means all electrics are behind an RCD.

Used to have the Netgear HDX101 200Mbps plugs --> Not able to stream 1080p and reliability was poo.

Now running the Devolo AV200 plugs which work absolutely flawlessly and able sustain 20Mb connection and stream HD without a single skip, despite being behind an RCD. Would wholeheartedly recomend these plugs and can't believe I never switched earlier....

I had a pair of the 85Mbps adapters - some OEM variety. Were OK but needed resetting quite often. Now have a pair of the Devolo 200Mbps - not a single problem in 18 months. Performance is good and stream 1080p OK.

I've got some 'no brand' 200mbps homeplugs, and they have been flawless up until very recently, but I have started experiencing random horrendous lag spikes, (over 1500ms ping using Ping Test) and really bad jitter on occasion. Generally they're fine. They're on the same main, and both plugged directly into the wall, rather than on a shared 4-way socket or something.

Any ideas?

I have zyxel AV200 200mps homeplugs with a zyxel homeplug AV200 wifi router to expand my network into my garage and garden and I have no problems at all.

Go around and try unplugging things one by one see how that affects it?
The article in the original post points out a mobile phone charger as a culprit, so maybe start with all your device chargers? :)

I bought a newlink 200 starter kit....it sucks donkey balls!
It reports that the connection is 165mbps but can't load up webpages.
I've moved the laptop connection end from socket to socket with increasing connection speed, but random ping timeouts and no webpage loading......total waste of money.
As a result, i is sad :(

time to buy a devolo kit!

would it be better than running a wireles connection to a desktop thats on the floor above, but soon to be in a converted loft, or just run a 30m odd cable?

well new house and all, i have the women folk telling me if they see a wire in a doorway on on a stair they will slice it :(

for online gaming (MW2/cod4/BC2) and ps3 and 360, is ping heavily affected?

Quick test on my network...

My PC to WDTV Live via homplug 3ms.
My PC to machine running Windows Server via cat5e 1ms.

Similar distances, and the same number off hops.

I use the original (cheapest) AVeasy adapters. The later ones just add features, not performance (as far as I know).

I've had the Devolo for quite a while. It works ok, I can stream 720p but 1080p struggles. It is however far batter than the dozen or so wireless solutions I have tried.

Mine links downstairs\upstairs through RCD zones. It gets about 4MB\s sustained on a file transfer if I'm lucky.
