Well after months of deliberation i finally bought Oblivion

Having never played this type of game before, i am a little overwelmed to say the least. I have just been following the story so far and i have just closed the 1st oblivion gate.

I can't even remember what character i picked lol although he is an archer.

So have you got any general tips for improving my character and leveling up ?

Also i totally suck at picking locks, any tips for this also ?

thanks for your time guys & girls :D

I found that at the beginning an archer is a little underpowered compared to a swordsman.

What I did was do some sidequests first, I was on my way to the first contact, found a village that had a problem, started to help them, found a cave with a woman in front that needed help etc.... I think I played 60 hours before going back to the main story.

As for picking locks, there is really not much to do other than keep trying, I found that very annoying.

I played through as an archer and the further along I got the more powerful I became.

Use stealth a lot. If you can fire an arrow before the enemy knows you're there it'll hit for uo to triple damage and you can quite often kill someone in the one hit. This is especially good for dungeons.
Remember to pick the arrow out of your enemy and keep a heathy stock on you. Also pay special attention to the arrows weight. Some arrows may look good but are way too heavy.

Have a good light sword on a hot key if your arrow doesn't kill the enemy.

Look at your minor skills and make sure you use abilities / cast spells that raise these too. This is the key to getting good modifiers when you level up. If you only use your major skills you'll only get x2 modifiers rather than x5.

Join as many guilds as you can. You get benefits and the quests are excellent. Even if you don't want to do any magic it's still worth joining the mages guild and vice versa.

A good character to have is a Bretan, good at magick and handy with a sword, I have one, and with custom attributes and The Atronach as a birthsign, he has 400 points of Magicka at level 2 which is very handy.

Don't do the main quests to start of with, just explore, and DON'T fast travel, walk, you will find out a lot more side quests and make it easier later on in the game.

Try and make potions early on to boost your attributes.

I found it best to play for a while, see what I was good at then restart making a decent character, and using custom attributes so that I could level easier, for example, speechcraft and blunt were things I never used or increased, so I made a character with common main attributes like Blade, Light armour, heavy armour, restoration, destruction etc.

Pick up every plant you can find.

Join the mages guild, then nick everything you can find plant/herb wise in the guilds, make potions ( look at UESP best source for Oblivion stuff, esp potions)

Talk to everyone.

If you complete Nocturnal's Daedric quest she gives you a skeleton key which is an unbreakable picklock. Jobs a good'un

yeah this is a must have, you have to be a certain level though, at least 10 maybe?

But you have to be level 10 to do that quest....

Lockpicking I found, was quite easy, the pins have two speeds, slow and fast, flick the pin up, if it is fast, the next one will be slow, press the button as soon as it reaches the top. It can get really frustrating though.

There is a bloke near the dock entrance to the imperial city that sells 30 picks at a time. If you travel there, look at the gate, then turn left and follow the city wall, you will see him after a while. :)

Do the sidequest at the start (the one with the fish) and get the unlimited underwater breathing.

Makes it fun when you're running from the guards ;)

Isn't that only after you join the Thieves Guild?

Remove your boots when using stealth, the sound ot the boots makes you easier detectable (I think later on when you are more leveld the vboots are irrelevant)

And stealth is something you deffo need as an archer.

yeah if you want to level up your spellcasting skills quickly you need to get into the mage guild

Once there creat 1 mana spells for each class, so something like add 1 strength, nightvision, bound weapon for a second, light, that sort of stuff. Then EVERYWHERE you walk repeatedly cast these spells, your skills will shoot up before you know it.

Do a load of side quests first, i didnt think the main quest was that long, and it will be more fun to do if youve got better skills, weapons and magic etc.

Try not to kill civilians or anyone with a name (enless requested to do so obviously!) because the chances are you will have to do a quest for them which wont be possible if theyre dead!

Also avoid vampirism! (enless youre messing around!) If you catch porphyric hemophillia in a cave and sleep you wake up as a vampire. Which is really annoying because you cant go out in day light and you have to kill people for blood (which effects infamy) and no one talks to you after a while! You also have to do some stupid lengthy quest for a cure which involves getting loads of random plants, some of which are in hidden within oblivion planes! You do get v. nice strenghth attributes though as a vampire! Using a cure diesase potion once youre out the cave removes the illness.

Talking to people is a good way of finding quests etc and increasing your disposition (learn that speechcraft game thing, its quite complicated at first!) Keeping your fame higher than you infamy means people will like you more and speak to you more.

Id also read a detailed article on the internet about leveling up because if you level too early you will miss chances of increasing you stats by up to +10!

There is a very good reason to kill one though ;)

Thought the highest modifier on level up was +5?
