Two-second gap

At all times maintain a two-second gap from the vehicle ahead, no matter what speed you are traveling. When it is raining, a foggy night, or any combination of these, the gap should be doubled to four seconds.

Safety gap between vehicles

When you stop behind another vehicle in a line of traffic, always ensure you are able to clearly see the bottom of the vehicle's rear tyres. This ensures you are not too close to the other vehicle. Also, as you commence to move your two-second gap will already be in place.

Keep left

Keep to the left at all times unless overtaking. The right hand lane is for overtaking, or turning right. Use it for driving straight through only if the left lane is obstructed by road works or parked vehicles, or if it is not useable for any reason.

Indicate early

Where practical, use your indicators for at least 30 meters before commencing to turn or change lanes, to tell other road users what you will do.

Somebody swallowed the highway code!

Build Rapport with the instructor
Whilst walking to the car with your instructor, call shotgun, establish early who is the more dominant human of the two of you.

Correct Application of Power
Spin the front wheels at every set of lights, regardless of the fact your probably driving a 1.2 rot box.

Correct Handbrake Application
You'll definitely score extra points if you use your handbrake to get you into a tight bay-park manoeuvre. If the instructor is woman, you might even get some. As Top Gear told us, Women go wild for handbrake turns.

Roadcraft - External Hazards
If you fail to highlight the pigheaded, simple error of another driver to the driving instructor, instant fail. A few phallic hand gestures will only score you more points. +1 point for every swear word you can get in as well. Instant pass if you fling excrement out of the drivers window at the offending car.

Patience of Others
Old Lady Dorris is unaware of how quickly you want this test over. Her zimmer frame is taking for ever to cross the zebra crossing. Taking the engine to the rev limiter redline whilst stationary a few times is a sure-fire way to inform her of your patience.

Using Gears Correctly
You will be instantly marked down if a piston doesn't burst out from under the bonnet. You have been using too high of a gear. Any higher than 2nd is unacceptable, especially on a national speed limit road.

Awareness of other road users
When waiting at traffic lights, wait in gear, handbrake off, car held on the footbreak. Establish eye contact with the driver of the neighboring vehicle. A triple application of the horn indicates that you are intending to challenge the driver to a drag race once the lights turn green. If the opposition fails to accept the challenge, you must try again at the next of lights. If you are nearly the end of the test, and have yet to accept the race, whilst waiting at traffic lights, reverse into the car behind and commence a high speed pursuit whilst they try to inform the police.

Give yourself enough space so that if you need to react to a situation that has or is developing you can safely navigate it. Cant over emphasize that enough

Do not fixate yourself on the car in front of you, look beyond when you can. Try to look as far down the road as possible and look for any potential hazards if you anticipate what is going to/about to happen you will give yourself time refer to the above.

Make sure your road position is correct and you are in the correct gear and check your mirrors frequently.

Always remember if someone is crossing a side road that you are turning into you have to give them right of way. Could have cost me dearly as it happened on the last turing into the test centre.

Build Rapport with the instructor
Whilst walking to the car with your instructor, call shotgun, establish early who is the more dominant human of the two of you.

Why would you call shotgun? Surely you want to be in the drivers seat so you can actually do some driving and learn to drive? What would be the point in taking shotgun and letting the instructor just drive you around? It would be a wasted lesson.

Don't race police cars
You may want to do a traffic light burn out with a patrol car but you must resist the urge.

Making a call during the test
Don't call your mother for tips during the test even if she is the world's best driver.

You're welcome.

Get to the speed limit as quickly as possible.
I was given extra praise for this on my test score sheet and had a short discussion congratulating me on it at the end.

Keep up with the flow of traffic.
45 in a 30 zone is quite acceptable as long as you only do those speeds to keep up with other traffic.
