Tips on haggling

Music shops are for some reason, one of the few places where haggling is expected. In a few cases the owner has just given me a discount without me asking because he expected me to haggle.

To the OP, ask him his lowest price and then try and get him down to 600 if he doesnt go that low. If he wont budge ask him to throw in some freebees like cables or whatever you want.
 
I used to work in a music shop - they are really suffering money wise at the moment and lots are closing down.

On they whole, you should be able to make a 15% discount. We could go as low as 35% before not making a profit, but be aware that many music companys ask retailers to lock the price of a product. I recently bought an item for £1300 and could not even get a penny off it due to this system (but they did give me £100 commission lol).

Haggle him down to the his lowest price, then say its too expensive and leave the shop. Go back a bit later and haggle more.

£20 is £20, what's your problem? might not be much in your eyes but a saving is a saving. But you're intitled to an opinion.

I only tried haggling the other week for the first time, on a new AV amp for my home cinema. I did strike a good deal with the saleman and eventually got a price match and some money back plus I was given a 5 year warranty over the 3 year originally.

Was a good experience and gave me loads of confidence.

Both walked away happy chappys.

Thumbs up I say, as long as you don't take the biscuit I think it's a good thing.

Is this some kind of "look at how much money I have" posts?

All is takes is "I'll give you (price - £20)" = £20 in your pocket. If you are too embarrassed or socially inept (or rich) to try it, then fair enough, but making out as if £20 is too small an amount of money to gain for zero effort is a rather odd point of view.

No, I have dealings with people who try to haggle everything and all I can say is that unless it is something that will come with a high amount of profit (e.g. new cars, house etc) then I find the shear audacity of presuming you can badger someone enough to get a couple of quid in your pocket just annoying, everyone I have seen trying to do it always comes across as a complete tool.

Fair play to those who want to try it, but as elvisfan said if you were to try and haggle something off me I would tell you to bugger off but with the added effect of refusing to sell you it a the price I wanted for it.

maybe they come across as a tool to you because they have the inteligence to negotiate a discount rather than pay the marked price no questions asked like a zombie but over the course of a year im sure these little savings of 20 pounds here and there add up to a nice sum of money.

now over 50 years or more i imagine all these small 20pound savings = a large chunk of cash.

That fair enough - it's the definition of a buyers market just now, so you keep telling customers to bugger off and see how that goes ;)
 
Some people don't like haggling, I get that.

But these people are more than likely the ones saving the pennies all year round for the sales. Espcially last year, knowing shops would slash prices early. Not paying full price, saving £100 quid here and there. Yeah it's all fine, now, though.

why not pay the full price and stop being stinge bags, if haggling is that much of an issue?


I'd love to know the bargains, these people got over the festive period.
 
Quick update in case anyone is interested. I managed to get zero discount from my haggling adventure.

I contacted a couple of other shops, one of which was a Yamaha dealer (I bought a Yamaha multitrack studio thing) and interestingly enough Yamaha have apparently raised all their prices by about 20% from this Monday. Any stock coming in will be priced at this much higher rate.

So the guy at the Yamaha dealership told me to bite these guys hands off, as it will be stock at the old price, and seeing as they only had one unit left I was getting a good deal.

So at the shop I asked for a small discount as I was paying cash and the price they quoted would have included their CC fees / courier costs etc. But these guys refused to give even a penny :) Fair enough. It was all good natured and there was no sense of me being out of order. In fact the main guy there gave me two bottles of beer :)

As someone above mentioned, music shops expect a bit of haggling. I called a mate of mine who worked in the sound control chain and he told me to go for it, haggling was expected and they'll match prices / give you a deal if they can.

Seems to me they are the ones getting a good deal when people blindly pay the ticket price.

Not the same, is it?

It's like saying "If I were a bus driver, I'd never be late", "If I were a taxi driver, I'd never get lost", or "If I were a footballer, I'd score in every match".

You can't say "I would tell them to bugger off", because quite simply you'd lose the sale, and eventually your job. It's easy to put yourself in someone else's shoes and speculate as to how you'd act, the reality is often far different. You've clearly seen some idiots trying to haggle - that is a reflection on them, rather than on haggling itself. Nothing wrong with trying to get a discount - £20 in my pocket is better than £20 in theirs.
