Decided to jump the AMD ship and move to Intel.

New 'bits'

E8400
Tunic Tower
Asus p5K Premium
4gb(2x2gb) DDR2 Dominator PC2 -8500

Other bits coming from existing comp:-

2x250gb Hitachi HD's(Raid 0)+ 160gb spare Maxtor
9800GTX
Pioneer Blueray Drive+ DVD drive
Terratec TV card
windows xp (home) - I know it wont see all the ram - next upgrade is o.s.
x-fi extreme music
700w Coolermaster M psu

Any advise appreciated as will be looking to build at the weekend :D

P.S. Upgrading from Opty 185(clocked at 2.76)on Asus A8N32 with 2gb pc4000 ram

Forgive me, but I can't see where you are wanting the advice? :-) Are the bits at the top not yet bought and you're asking for feedback on them? or something else?

be careful with the push pins that the cpu cooler uses. compelty different to amds and takes some getting used to!

Cant you wait a few weeks and get the 9800GTX+ or even that 9800GTX for less.

There is also a CPU price drop from Intel also and a couple of new CPU's so the new E8600 will make the E8500 and E8400 drop in price more.

You dont really have to bother with a fresh windows as its capable of just switching drivers... (i did the same thing a few months ago).

Oh also push pins for the hsf are they LAMEIST thing ever (amd things are much easyer to do)

make sure that ram can fit in slot 1 of the memory without issues with the tuniq tower on your choice of board as it may well turn out it cant.

why are push pins so bad?
will his board work with the e8400 out of the box? seeing as hes only just switching to intel he obviously wont have another chip he can use to flash the bios if he needs to.

The board should be fine.

Push pins, on the other hand, require you to line up all 4 (one in each corner) up with the hole its going into then turn in order (from corner to corner stylee) to apply pressure to the cpu and get a good contact. The only flaw in this is that usually you get 3 in and one is milles off (my heat sink fell off the first time i had to take my comp out as i hadnt gotten it quite right). Basically its a pain!

The best way around it is to mount the heatsink before you put the board in the case (maximum accessability to the tiny pins, yeah they are really small too so not good for your average male computer geek).

*sighs* its not as simple as amd made it (but the speed is worth it)

Sorry for causing any confusion - have bought all new bits & will be building 'new' pc at weekend.

Since Pentium 166 have only used AMD - so a little concerned that I might well make a few mistakes when building purely because it'l be my '1st' Intel /DDR2build.

No doubt will I manage a few 'dumb' errors :(:D but would like to keep'em to a minimum

would very much appreciate advise as to how to do this !!!!

Moved from amd to intel myslef and it was such an easy build. The pins on the cooler where a nightmare, so maybe buy a newer one, I could not get the stock one on. But swapped it for a ac7 which was so much easier (apart from the fact it was so easy inever noticed i put it wrong way round til 3 months later :s)

Yep the pushpins are awful things but as you are doing the right thing and buying a Tunic Tower that won't be an issue as it uses a back plate and screws to mount the cooler.

You should have no problems, I have virtually the same setup as you, the only thing to be aware of is that sometimes the E8400 can give screwy temperature readings as seen on other threads.

Apart from that you are good to go! Enjoy your new burst of speed! :)

remove old drivers,

Presume you mean motherboard drivers.

As I have a nvidia chipset then I could , simply, remove all nvidia drivers etc BUT this also removes the nvidia raid drivers/set up I'm using

Is this a problem ?

New board will presumambly have its own raid set up.
