Hi.
I got bored a few mins ago, and after running a few line checkers, it appears i cant get more than 512kbps ADSL, but can get upto 3Mb ADSL Max.
So now i want to change ISPs.
Are Tiscali giving out MACs now when requested? Is it finally like other ISPs, and migration from Tiscali has minimal downtime?

I'm not sure but they should issue them without hassle. Give them and ring and if they stall report them to Ofcom!
 
Phoned them up.
They've finally changed my 512 unlimited from £25/month to £10 a month.
And the guy i got, said that if i ring the cancelations line and ask for a MAC, they'll give it me. And once ive given it my new ISP, they'll be a few hours downtime to me, and thats it.

Which im quite pleased about.
So im gonna see how it goes for a week or so, and then in the mean time, research other ISPs.
Im tempted by Pipex tbh. Any suggestions. I find ADSL guide a pain to find out that sort of information on before anyone suggests there (or anywhere similar. :p)

What is your budget? What are your usage requirements?
 
Unlimited line is a must. And i do mean unlimited.
If ive been DLing a lot, i average about 20Gb a month.
The ISP must also not be blocking any common ports. Or have been known to do so.
Im on 512 at the moment.
I dont really want to spend more than £20. £25 at a push.
As fast as possible in regards to speed. As stable as possible as well. Tiscali have their flaws, but downtime due to them isnt. It rarely drops the connection.

All of their telephone support must be based in the UK. Im fed up of tech supports that i dont understand.

I'd also prefer to stick with one of the bigger companys.

Nildram - MaxDSL with a 50GB peaktime cap is £25.99

They're pretty good, and miles and miles better than Tiscali, that's for sure

What can Ofcom do about it? ISP's aren't legally bound to give out MAC codes.
 
I was looking at that Nildram offer:

Although if there were similar 'specs' for 2Mb on another ISP, i'd be tempted by that.
 
Hmm.
Am i correct in thinking that the 'MaxDSL' option that some ISPs offer, will offer me the fastest that my line will do, upto 8Mbps? So if my line is ever upgraded so it can go above 3Mbps, i can get the full 8Mbps without paying extra?
 
This 3mbps figure is just a BT checker guesstimate, you might or might not get that, you might get more even.

MaxDSL is rate adaptive, it'll sync at the highest speed it can, down to a target SNR, so yes, if BT did improve your line (no idea why they would, unless they replaced sections of old cable for some reason), your sync speed would go up.
 
Im tempted to go for the 3Mbps Nildram to be honest.

I told Tiscali this morning to change my 512/£25 to 512/£10. Will this affect migration at all if i was to go ahead with it?

Would listing my current sync settings here allow anyone to tell me what sort of speed i could expect from a MaxDSL line? Because im not too keen on shelling out for a service that may or may not be any faster than what im currently on.

The BT/ISP line checkers say i can get 3Mb MaxDSL. & Maybe 1Mb normal ADSL.
The SamKnows Checker says the same.

You need to input:

Attenuation = 54dB
Noise margin (SNR) = 12dB

I'm not sure about your line speed - you appear to have a 1Mbps service not 512Kbps?

The complaints procedure is a waste of time unless the ISP has signed up to the voluntary code of practise. That said, Tiscali have signed up to it.

Basically the ISP can block you migrating by means of a MAC code but they can't of course stop you moving by cancelling your contact and starting from scratch elsewhere.
