Tiscali MACs.

I found this checker to be better:
http://www.dslzoneuk.net/maxspeed.php

Your results were:
Based on the values you entered, we estimate that your line can support around 1.8 - 2.6 Mbps.

I'm personaly itching for max :o
Based on the values you entered, we estimate that your line can support around 7.5 - 8.0 Mbps.

1Mbit capped at 512Kbit I assume.

Yeah, a friend of mine has a 512Kbps service with Tesco

This reports as 2.2Mbps in the Internet Connection Status Window but isn't. People should just go for a decent ISP really...

the reason isps synch users at higher speeds and then cap them to the service they are paying for, is so that if a user wants to upgrade then they can do it themseleves without having to involve bt. makes sense to me... :)

Tesco only offer a maximum of 1Mbps ADSL so the self regrade to 2Mbps doesn't seem to be an option (as far as I'm aware).

and back to the original question.... :p

Yes. Until recently it wasn't possible to transfer to or from TisNearly because they used a different technology to nearly everyone else. (Yet another reason never to subscribe to them) But this has recently changed although TisNearly only shout about the new ability to transfer TO them using a MAC.

Now there's just the worst customer service in the land to deter customers from joining TisNearly. Opps - second to Carphonedustbin

Does this agree with the values reported by the BT Checker?

Yeah. My ATEN/SNR are 30db / 1db (Synched at 2mb) and I'm only about 100 meters from our exchange (small village; not many people really use it either) :)

But this has recently changed

AFAIK, Tiscali still do use DataStream, the only difference is that DataStream migrations are a possibility.

The DSLZone checker's a bit...wonky. I'd take both calculators with a lot of salt (other than as a guideline), and incline towards "you'll get what you get".

Im gonna give Tiscali a week and see if they give me the option to upgrade the line. If not, come friday afternoon, im ringing Nildram and going for their MaxDSL option.

Just had a thought.
As i understand it, MaxDSL for the first week or so keeps testing the line, so that after a week, the most stable/fastest 'setting' is used.
Would those tests be affected by the fact that i have my router set to never drop the connection? Would for that week, would it be better to set my router to 'connect on demand'?
Thanks.

The quoted figure is 10 days, but mine took 21 to settle down.

No, it won't matter that your router is set to keepalive the connection, as the SNR drops the router will lose then regain sync.
