Hi guys is the above Titan Scythe a good deal for a BF4 machine running twin 1080p monitors?

I have a M500 240Gb SSD and a full copy of Windows 7 home premium to install as boot drive.

Are there any upgrades/downgrades I should action. I need a smaller white case for it also, any ideas?

Many thanks

Dave

EDIT: I should add that I can build it myself if I can do better with OCUK components. My current one is this. I know the GTX 770 is good, would a R9 280X be better?

You could do with swapping the 770 out for a 280X so you can get the benefits of Mantle. That isn't in the options list, but you can ask customer service to do it for you.

How much smaller do you need the case to be?

Aaaand...would you consider building it yourself?

Just seen the edit to your OP - thanks.

What is your budget? Around £1000?

And on the case: do you have any specific size requirements? Would you like an mATX system?

Build it myself is no problem, the spec seemed close to my own sort of plans. Can you amazing experts beat it? I have the SSD and windows to add anyway.

Yes to overclock. £1000 max ideally. Midi tower or just above ok. Got to fit in an Ikea Ullrik under desk unit ideally.

Max depth 500mm ish, max height 590mm ish and wdth under 240mm

The RAM is a bargain on Today Only offer.

Thanks Fulax, great info.

How does the R9 290 compare to the 280X?

I saw that case but it doesn't have front 5.25 bays does it. I may actually have an external USB DVD writer so I may be able to cope without.

I have always assumed an ATX board would be better (bigger is better!) but is there any harm in going mATX?

Cheers and thanks again.

Dave

mATX boards can be pretty great these days. A good mATX board will give you just as much performance as a good ATX board. Obviously size is still a limitation in terms of features and expansion options, but the Z87M Gaming still has four RAM and two PCI-E x16 slots.

The 290 is a decent jump over the 280X, and at current prices worth the difference IMO.

I see you use a Gigabyte sniper mb albeit a higher model. If I mixed and matched your two builds using an ATX mb are there any issues. I like the bargain RAM and the psu looks great. I will have to see what the availability of that case is though.

Is the i7 4770 worth the upgrade over the i5 and do you think I need to with water for cooling. I like the look of it although I haven't used it before and I have only seen the H80i and H100i.

Cheers

Dave

Depends - which parts were you wanting to mix and match?

The white RAM has a very tall heatsink so it won't be compatible with all big air coolers. You should just be OK with the Alpenfohn Mount Doom if you swap the fan from front to back. 240mm AIO water coolers will give you better performance than a big air cooler, and they look much better (which was the primary reason I put an AIO in the H440). The Antec 1220 is a better cooler than the h100i, and it's a good deal cheaper at the moment. The 1220 will also fit in the Aerocool case. If you did that, you would be able to drop the Enermax fans I included in that spec.

i7 versus i5...the great debate. For most games you will see almost no difference. However, some games are able to utilise the 4770k's extra cores, which should (in theory) result in better performance. BF4 is one of those games. If you do video editing and the like you will certainly see some benefits. The general advice is to get an i7 if it fits into your budget, but don't compromise elsewhere (especially on the GPU) to make it happen.

My Sniper is the mATX version - it's a great piece of kit.

Latest ETA on the H440 is end of this month or beginning of March.

Thanks for the info I will juggle it around and post here for your final check if that ok. The case is my only decision now as not sure whether to go diskless? The time scales should be ok for its eta.

White RAM and that cooler are definites and I will be doing some photoshop so the i7 may be worth the extra.

Are the better cooling options on the 290 cards worth the extra?

Like the Gigabyte Radeon R9 290 OC WindForce or the Tri-X ones or are the 290s ok. I remember reading the 290X was much better with the newer cooling?

Cheers

Dave

Gibbo rates the MSI and Sapphire 290s highly: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18575360

The MSI 290 is £20 cheaper than the Sapphire at the moment and comes with a backplate, so I'd say it would be a good choice. The 290X isn't worth the extra over the 290.

I don't have a 5.25" drive in my PC - I just use an external one on those rare occasions I need to use a disc. You hardly need them any more now you can download everything. They also make the case look messy.

I don't think there are any other good white ATX cases that come within your space requirements.

Have been calculating! Still unsure which motherboard though. Your second build is closer to the mark I think. Is the gigabyte sniper better than the mATX MSI?

Trying to decide whether to go i7 or i5 still!

Cheers

Dave

Tough call on which is better - I'd choose my Sniper M5 again over the MSI Z87M, so I suppose I'd say go for the Gigabyte board. Ultimately, though, if you choose the ATX case get the ATX board - simple as that. I'd certainly get the ATX Sniper over one of MSI's equivalent ATX boards.

Hi Fulax,

I have ordered! Can I check the 650watt Superflower will be adequate for a 290 GPU? Some seem to suggest I need a 750watt? Are the Supeflowers powerful enough to cope with an overclocked i5 and SSD and 1Tb hard drive?

Cheers

Dave

Yeah, that will be absolutely fine - I've got a 650w PSU powering the PC in my sig. Manufacturers give inflated power requirements to cover themselves in case customers buy a rubbish unbranded PSU and the whole thing blows up. Fortunately, Superflower make quality PSUs.

Excellent! I told OC how much of a help you were so well done. I had an issue with the RAM where they put the price up but they have honoured the cheaper price (I hope, am waiting for email!)

The case should be here end of the month/beginning of March.
