titan x or not

Add another game where 12gb vram is needed - COD BO2
We're going to be seeing this more oftern, if you game at 4k theres no other option, if your 1440p time is limited.

Titan x now is just not worth it. I had 980s with 4gb VRAM they never ran out of memory on 4k at 60fps with as many settings as their power would allow. This is with bf4, mordor, dying light, skyrim, witch 3, adv warfare. 12gb isn't needed.

The price hike is just not worth it. 3 cards has diminishing returns of an additional 30% if that over 2 way SLI. Even then some games can run worse.

Single 980 no problems with memory but 3 or 4 up at 2160p and they will run out of memory a lot.

SLI or C/F works well in a lot of games @2160p with multiple GPUs as there is no CPU bottleneck.

This was with 980 SLI at 4k ;). I know someone who only just managed to get 3 wind force 980s to run out at 4k, even then they still ran well.

With 4 cards I agree for future proofing. But that's some serious costings there.

1440p is no where near. Yet to see over 4gb on my Ti's 144hz 1440p all maxed out, usually around 3-3.5gb. Some games it can be quite a bit less.

3-3.5 is nowhere near 4GB?... Really??? :D

I'd say 3-3.5 is nowhere near 12GB... But it's bloody close to 4! ;)

My Ti's are 6gb not 4 :D.

Plenty VRAM left. The time they run out of VRAM I will have long upgraded.

If you want close... I managed to get my old 980s up to 4042mb odd. Limit was 4096. Still they never exceeded their limit :p

Yeah I was pointing out your math... Stating 3-3.5 is nowhere near 4... Sounded a bit stupid.... :D

I got sucked in a generation ago with the 780 versus Titan comparisons...

People jumping hard on 6GB Titan owners about how it was overkill, a waste of money and their 3GB 780`s were nearly as fast as the Titan but nearly half the price...
SLI them and they smash the Titans out the park...
Yada-yada-yada...

So yeah... I bought into it and went the 3GB 780 SLI route...

Not long after ,4k gaming cropped up and the 6GB Titans could JUST manage it in SLI well enough...

Whereas... The 3GB 780`s were rendered useless @4k...

What's that saying?...

Fool me once, shame on you...
Fool me twice, shame on me....

Something like that?

So anyways, come 4k upgrade time, I didn't listen to those naysayers and go down the cheaper is better route again after last time...

It was my money... my choice... And the TX`s are the best all-round card available currently that should be good for the next couple of gens to boot!

But hey! Let's all pick a card and be a dick about it! :D

i didnt state 3.5gb was no where near 4. I said 1440p is no where near running out of memory on my Ti's. You was saying 1440p is limited with im guessing 6gb on the 980Ti.

Just finished couple hours gameplay on mad max with everything maxed out at solid 120hz 1440p. Max vram usage was 2047mb :p

I understand you getting titans for 4k and longevity. I actually upgraded my 980s to ti's for 4k just to give me a touch more headroom. They ran perfectly and would do so until i upgrade in a year or so. I since then opted for the 1440p 120/144hz route as i far prefer it over 4k 60hz.

But as i said even my old 980s were fine in 4k with 4gb. They would have ran out of power before they hit the limit and in many cases they did hense lower settings and thus lower VRAM usage of about 3-3.2gb in most games. 4GB is not enough i agree, i was so close on many games. 6gb will be enough for a year or so but after that more and more will be needed. By then 1080Ti's :p

I think the pic below of a single TitanX memory usage on Black Ops 3 really does make the point.

And there is little point in waiting for small Pascal as these cards are unlikely to come with 12gb or more, that will happen later with big Pascal arriving with 16gb.

That's at 4K I'm guessing isn't it ?

Tried it at 1440P and it hovers around 4-5GB maxed out which aint bad.

I think people are taking those memory usage pics too seriously. It's just the game caching textures etc in memory if there is a set amount of memory available. You see different usages on different cards at same resolutions. For example i bet a 980Ti dosn't cry and die at 4k on BLOPs3 or start stuttering and loosing frames vs a Titan x. It will just flush the memory buffer more frequently.

This doesn't affect game performance, well anything that you would notice if you was actually playing and not actively looking for it.
For bigger memory buffers, it just calls on the data stored in the memory buffer when needed, it could be in there idle not doing anything. It's not a good reason to air a sales pitch for a titan x lol.

OHH look at these games using xxxx amount of Vram you need a titan x... I mean Seriously guys? You don't know what's going on?

Just started playing shadow of mordor, was surprised to see it hit 7.5GB vram usage very quickly. This is on ultra settings @4k

Not that that means a 6GB card would have any material degradation but I guess the odd game is getting close.

And I would still go for a 980Ti over a TX

Watch Dogs at max settings 2160p does cripple a 6gb card, I have seen it do it.

For single card use - GTX 980 Ti every time.

For SLI card use - GTX 980 Ti some of the time.

For more than 2 cards - TitanXs.

Depends i guess. I havent had my cards go over 6gb on 4k with every setting maxed out, with mordor, watch dogs etc. Even if they did it would be a poor experience by then and the gameplay would be un-enjoyable at low fps.

I think for 2way SLI 980Ti's are fine for now. The time they run out of vram it would be a poor running experience anyway.

3-4 cards then obv to go with Titan X.

Starting to wonder if the Nvidia drivers are using more memory than they should for Titan X owners just to make them feel less ripped off :p
