Can you provide proof that they are working on 20nm? I am not fussed either way and would prefer you to be right and me wrong. I just read an article that had TSMC working on 20nm and that was for Apple.
I wouldn't claim to know either way and was saying it would be nice for AMD to confirm.
Given that 20nm is what TSMC are rolling out logic would suggest it is the next step, given also that (and I think it was you who posted this) Nvidia claimed Maxwell (20nm) would yield ~2x the performance of the GTX 680.
I said at the time "I believe it when I see it" I now do believe it given that 28nm to 20nm yields ~2x the space for shader processor count.
Which incidentally is exactly what the leaked HD 9970 specifications are http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18512085
2048 SP's vs 4096..... ect....
While there is no real reason to suggest these leaked specifications are real, equally there is no reason to suggest they are not, and with Nvidia's bold claims of ~2x I would suggest there may well be some truth in them.
Also-
GTX 480 vs GTX 580 + 15% (40nm)
GTX 580 vs GTX 680 + 60% (28nm)
GTX 680 vs GTX 780 + 25% (28nm) May
GTX 680 vs GTX 880 + 80% (20nm) Feb?
5870 vs 6970 + 15% (40nm)
6970 vs 7970 + 80% (28nm)
7970 vs 8970 + 15% (28nm) June ??????
7970 vs 9970 + 80% (20nm) Nov / Dec / Jan? Last year, a report revealed that AMD’s Volcanic Islands series would be the first to make use of a 20nm process and would arrive sometime in 2014. However, in a recent interview with AMD’s Jim Keller and Chekib Akrout, Rage3d has revealed that the Volcanic Islands GPUs would launch in 2013.
My advice simply is: if you can wait its probably a good idea that you do.
