Titanic sinking theory

This thread has been amazing and very fascinating, thanks to everyone who has contributed!

I have one question though, what ever became of the White Star shipping company? Did they get the insurance money for the titanic? Did the company survive? Do they still makes ships today?

EDIT: Question 2, I think it's amazing that "Violet Jesso" survived three ship disasters, they definitely should make a film based on her life story! How old did she live to? is she still alive?

Thanks in advance.

White Star and Cunard merged in the end they are all part of Carnival now. The settlement for Titanic was somewhere between $5-10 million although it has never been fully disclosed. They never made ships just designed them, They were built by Harland and Wolff in Ireland. Harland and Wolff are still going and currently building wind farms if I remember...

Nobody has mentioned the wonderful technique of turning 2D pictures into 3D film.
I don't think I've ever seen that before.

There is a guy on TheDiveForum.com that I frequent who has begun to do this. He's a professional underwater photographer and he is somehow - I don't quite know how...photographing ships and making 3D models of them.

Incredible, really.

The settlement for Titanic itself was "only" £1m whilst this sounds small it was actually huge, bear in mind the total maritime losses paid out for all ships lost in 1912 including Titanic herself was in actual fact £6.75m claims for losses of life of passengers and their possessions bumped up this figure considerably however the majority of those claims were settled by American insurers rather than Lloyds of London who ultimately took on her risk.

The Titanic cost £1.5m to build ($7,500,000 at 1912 exchange rates!) and the payout being 2/3 of that cost puts another hole in some of the more bizarre conspiracy theories that claim for example that White Star actually made a profit from her sinking!

White Star had no hand in designing the ships, they ordered three large "Royal Mail Steamers" (RMS) and Harland & Wolffs Alexander Carlisle was in charge of designing them until he had a disagreement with Lord Pirrie (Chairman of Harland & Wolff) over the number of lifeboats for the Olympic class, he resigned and Pirrie's Nephew Thomas Andrews stepped in.

Carlisle wanted 64 Lifeboats, Andrews wanted 46, she sailed with 20 - 16 and 4 canvas sided "collapsible" boats.

After the Titanic disaster, Olympic was refitted and equipped with 64 lifeboats as per Carlisle's original design.
