tl;dr

If that goes, then quoting someone and not typing anything has to go too.

+1 means agreeing with someone, just the same as quoting them, only reason people ant it banned is because they don't like "1337 sPeAK" (I don't like it, but I'm fine with "+1").
It might do if you quote something or it's obvious what you're +1ing, but the majority of the time, it's just spam for the sake of post count.

Haven't really noticed the massive trend but I'm not complaining.

I don't mind the quoting and run rule or the +1 either because sometimes it's useful. Very rarely in GD, but if a hardware suggestion was made it perhaps lends weight to the first valid reply and helps reassure the OP a bit more.

E.g.

OP "What graphics card plz?"

1) "[This one]"

OP : "Hmm...really?"

2) +1
3) +1

OP : "Cheers"..

Obviously eighty of such replies is a joke but I can kind of see where it'll be useful.

I agree with the tl:dr thing. It doesn't add anything whatsover to a thread.

Another forum I frequent has a system for this, you can "+1" a post, and it adds your name to a last at the bottom of that post. It's a bit like a rep system, only it keeps no score, and you can't "-1".
