Played this for a good bit last night, quite enjoyable.
Now before I start, this is a game whose progress I've followed for a long while so I'm fully aware that what we're getting now is a taster of what Midway want to do with the Unreal Engine 3 and a mere hint of what is to come from TNA video games in the future.
The gameplay seems much better than what we've seen in Smackdown in recent years, but it's the features that SvR has brought to the plate that holds SvR in a different league right now.
If this becomes a yearly release like SvR has become, TNA: Impact could be an incredibly good video game sooner or later but it's missing so much right now it's just annoying.
Loadings between each intro is something SvR managed to solve by loading all the intros before the match, a niggling thing but it's still annoying as there's no quick way to skip them to get straight to the match.
Lack of matches. Sure it's got Ultimate X, but it'll need to put Ladder matches, Table matches, I Quit, Submission, Hardcore, Cage matches the list is endless. TNA have done some big matches in the past like barbed wire matches, but I don't think we'll see that in a video game any time soon (ECW managed to sneak it in there though so who knows).
The (damn near) one moveset for all wrestlers, or one set for high flyers, one for brawlers and one for submission matches is a real hamper on this game.
CAW mode may as well not be in there, it's like designing a caw 5 or 6 years ago... with little to no customisation, awful textures on the hair and everyone seems to look... samey?
Story mode is good, but with the serious lack of moves in this game they really shouldn't expect you to have to play through story mode to unlock things like a chop, back handed punch or a clothesline. Fine, let me unlock big moves or variations of moonsaults, powerbombs or new finishers... but I don't expect to have to unlock the basic of basic moves
It's a good game, obviously gameplay focused more than anything else but it's flaws are obvious and overshining a lot of it's good points.
It's a game I'll be playing more of that's for sure, and I've got high hopes for it in the future - but it's nowhere near where it could be in the future... or should have been.
Smackdown Vs Raw it is not, but it's a back to basics approach on a good gameplay focused wrestling game.
