Hi All , I have been reading up on TFT Monitors and still i,m puzzled what to get ha! I am not a gamer , but love to watch dvds so am i right in saying that it does not matter about the response time ? and is an IPS screen better quality pictures / viewing ?

I would suggest having a read of this for some well written descriptions of the technologies.

Indeed, IPS would be better for watching videos than a TN panel, response time will be not an issue with modern IPS monitors playing video content (look for less than 10ms, almost all are). However, some of the VA technologies offer even better black levels that IPS - so they would also be very good for video watching.

Finally, it is also worth considering a proper TV if you are mainly watching videos and and considering paying the premium for an IPS monitor. So long as you get one with a 1080p resolution and a decent write-up the viewing experiece will likely be better than a PC monitor, mainly due to the size. Many of the LCD TVs do use IPS or VA panels, they just use much larger pixel pitches than in PC monitors.

thanks very good info , so what good 26 inch lcd t.v are around ?

At 26in you are basically just getting repackaged TN monitors with more connections.

You generally need to go up to 32in and £350 to get into the range of proper TVs. One I would suggest looking at is the LG 32LH3000.

It's a big TN.

It should be fine, but obviously not have the same level of picture quality or viewing angles as an IPS. However, the large size will make videos and TV look good.

Many people on the forums have that monitor and the vast majority are very happy with it.

Yes, it is, and a very nice one at that. Here is a review.

Yeah very good review , just alittle bit concerned about the 8ms response time ,is this ok for dvd playing or is lower better ? but must say i,m very impressed with this monitor so any more feedback will help ;)

I wouldn't be concerned about the 8ms response time. That review has a section called "Responsiveness and Gaming" which shows the monitor does fine - and the "movies and video" part of the review says:

Good pixel responsiveness and very low input lag meaning the screen is fine for fast moving images

In general it seems to be on-par with the Dell U2410 in terms of responsiveness in games and movies. That monitor is great for both of these uses.

yeah thanks i feel it is a very good buy to ..

just to let you know i use a HP LP2475w with so called 34MS response time & a Samsung 30ST PLus with 45 response time i see no difference o my cheap samsung 22inch TN... that has 5ms

I think you may be thinking of input lag, not response time with those numbers. AFAIK that HP and Samsung are both quoted as having a 6ms grey-to-grey response times.

But your point is correct, for almost all modern monitors response time is more than fast enough to enjoy fast-paced gaming without ghosting.
