To 3D or not to 3D

microsoft has a technology in development generates 3d without needing glasses at all.
3d Without glasses
"Microsoft's prototype display can deliver 3-D video to two viewers at the same time (one video for each individual eye), regardless of where they are positioned. It can also shows ordinary 2-D video to up to four people simultaneously (one video for each person). The 3-D display uses a camera to track viewers so that it knows where to steer light toward them. The lens is also thin, which means it could be incorporated into a standard liquid crystal display"

It needs monitors with at least 240Hz (120Hz per viewer). With enough Hz, lots of things are possible with this tech. Such a display could show a standard 2d view to one person (using 60Hz), and other people could see specific a 2d display for each extra 60Hz. (or a 3d view for each 120hz).

Other companies are also working on glasses-free displays, so there's still plenty of innovation and development to come before we have a standard.

So if the above was combined with those speakers that are able to direct sound so that only an one person can here it you could effectively watch the football the same time as the other half is watching Coronation Street using the same screen

3D is a complete and utter gimmick.

I say get youself a full HD projecter and a 50" lcd for the same money and prepare to be blown away. Use the projector a few times a week for new games and films

Best thing i ever bought. Still amazes me how much attention youd pay to something when it takes up a whole wall in your living room :)

This. & my opinion is from a bloke who's installed a dolby surround setup in his room when he was 21 waaay back in 1987, & has upgraded to 6.1 HD sound & an HD ready projector over the years since. (I'll wait until this projector goes bang before buying a full HD projector thanks :p)

There's nothing or no one in the world that would convince me that a 3D telly in my home would be cool :o Even if it came as a standard feature on the next telly I buy i'd switch it off, I hate it that much.

3D is for the cinema methinks.

In some respects I'm glad 3D TV has come out as the 2D TV's have noticeably come down in price. Look at the 2D panny plasma's now, you can get a Panasonic Viera TX-P42X20B for £400 with a 5year warrenty!? This was unheard of not only a year ago.

As far as buying one for myself, I wouldn't until it's evolved to a point when I think wow that looks real. When it comes down to it I'd rather have a 50" OLED TV.....anyday

Some very good points and im starting to head towards non 3d

I did get an offer of £1200 for 3d tv, 3d blue ray and 2x glasses...... not a bad deal

well i've ordered a Samsung 46in 3d tv LE46C750R2KXXU because of it's spec, i'll be using it as a pc monitor also, 3d is a bonus. i've already watch a 3d movie at a mates house and tbh it looked really good. i'm looking forward receiving it by the 15th of november.

i've already received the blu-ray 3d player and 3d glasses.

total cost is just over £2.5k but that's because i'll be paying it weekly

Don't buy a 3D TV yet, the technology that allows you to use Real D glasses has just been licensed to the TV manufacturers, which will offer a much much better and more comfortable experience, hopefully mid next year we will see consumer sets with the technology.

Having been an early adopter of new hardware previously (not just tv, other things too), I now really CBA with it.
All the little problems you get when you take on new tech are, imo, not worth it, for the premium you pay.

I would rather wait about a year or 2 for the tech to mature. 2nd gen / 3rd gen tech nearly always performs much better and for better value.

3D is a complete and utter gimmick

I went into a shop today and eye tested an active 3D TV

Have to say, you're wrong.

I'll elaborate to soothe your indignation :)

The concept is sound, the execution leaves a lot to be desired but FFS, I've never seen depth of field like it on a TV or anywhere else.

Even in RL !

The issue is, at the moment, is content. There isn't enough 3D content around to warrant buying an active 3D TV to use as your main TV but as
far as 3D TV being a gimmick ? It's early days. Don't confuse marketing hype for something you don't get for something which is visually astonishing when it's done right.

"640K of memory should be enough for anybody"

4D TV anyone ? :D

There's not enough content but if you're buying a TV in the next month or two *like I am* surely it would be worth to buy a 3DTV. Especially if you won't be upgrading for at least 5years easily. Considering our current TV is 9 years old.

But you need glasses so no :p And surely it will get better. It's like I swear 1080p didn't come that long after 720p?
Don't know why they called it HD Ready for 720p anyway :S

Sort of spending double that haha. We had it for that long because it cost 1.5k!

Off to look at the one I've got my eyes on tomorrow at Lakes, then off to Richer Sounds

Now is a great time to buy a Full HD 42" plasma because everyone wants a 3D tv so obviously prices have dropped.

You can pick up a 600hz Panasonic 42" with all the extras, stand blue ray player 5 year warranty for £799 - Bargain.

All the Pioneers of 3D are talking about is stopping this requirement for glasses so wait i would say - go see the odd well shot film at the cinema occasionally and pocket the change.

(I look after much of the IT and EPOS Solutions for Electical Retailers Richer being one of them, so i know the deal ;) )
