To 8800 or wait for R600??

Competition is a good thing :)

IF you aren't desperate for a new card right now, all your current games run fine and you have some power to spare. Then I would say why not wait for the R600.

That way you will be able to pick the one that suits your needs and budget, and hopefully the prices should be more competative. Also there might actually be proper drivers for the Nvidia card for SLI and Vista......

you could look at it like this, the 8800GTX is a really powerfull dx9 card, with the capability for dx10.

just like when the AMD64's were released for the future, the future comes and the conroe is now the better choice.

Not that conroe is a reason to scrap your AMD mind.

Theres no point waiting, otherwise you'll never buy, when R600 gets here you'll be saying shall i wait for G90 as that will be due, then it will be shall i get the G90 or wait for the now announced <insert card here> .......... may as well face it, theres always a better card due not long after the one you buy. :)

If you need a new card now, buy the card that best suits YOUR needs and budget NOW. Don't put it off. Enjoy the increased performance of your new card relative to what you are used to. Don't lose sleep over the better cards aother people might have.

If you don't need a new card now (and deep in your soul you know the answer to that one, one way or another) don't buy one yet. Wait. Use your existing card till you reach the point where you get the almost religious call to buy a new one.

If you have no real intention to go to Vista soon forget about Vista. Also I strongly suggest not buying the most expensive card now, or ever for that matter. The depreciation is massive. Go mid - high end on cost (not performance necessarily).

dunno if u guys watched the launch of the 8800gtx but in that show the head of crytek showed a demo running on dx10 and said the 8800gtx will run crysis maxed out with good rez in dx10 mode the video should still be on you tube if u dont think this is true!!! this card remeber has been in dev for a long time now so there is no reason why nvidia's first dx10 card be crap with dx10 remeber nvidia work close with microsoft as well when they were dev vista + dx10

If you want to play Crysis decently, wait until the game goes gold.. order new PC.. build pc.. play the most fantastic looking game the way it was meant to be.

Thats my plan.. glad it got pushed back, just spent the new PC stash on a holiday.. oops!

So should I go with a 8800GTS 640Mb or wait to see what the ATI R600 cards are going to be like?
i am in same situation ,i have been waiting for too long, havnt bought 8800 yet though :/ ,dunno what to do since iam Ati person realy !

same, im a ati fan. i have a crossfire mobo etc, but iv been waiting too long aswell now so iv decided im getting a 320mb 205pound 8800gts which isnt exactly all of my life savings so when better dx10 cards come out ill still have enough to buy them.

cause as stated in another post 8800's will be considered the lowest range dx10 card compaired to future cards lol.

its like when dx9 came out, the cards built for dx9 the first ever dx9 cards arent even buyable no more, so 8800s will be like them :) so when the dx10 market gets goin ill have enough saved up again for a better card

I bought a 8800 320MB on release day, benched the crap out of it then sold it the following day. I realised there wasn't a single game released (that I hadn't already completed or got bored of) that intrested me, hence the 8800 would be going to waste in my system as it wouldn't be getting used. Anyway, atleast for the time being I'm more than happy to play the waiting game, plus I've always been a bit more partial towards ATI than Nvidia.

Edit:

To answer the OP's question, if you're finding your games are struggling to the point where you have to lower the details, resolution or both, then I can't think of a valid reason why you shouldn't buy a 8800 now rather than wait for a card that (for all we know) may not even be as good (unlikey I know but still possible).

i am in the same boat... but if im honest the games i play now dont need an 8800 GTX.. WoW CS 1.6 Medieval: TW 2. My lil X800 XT PE just about copes with it with reasonable FPS. So i will save my pot of gold until a game comes out that needs an 8800 or R600 then i shall get a better computer for my money. Or save a heap :D

So i guess the Q you should be asking is do you need the extra FPS now?

Wait for 8900 series to be released, dropping 8800 prices and get one of those.

I'm buying a 8800 this month or next, will be the first Nvidia card for ages (after a 9700 Pro, 9800XT and a X800 Pro). I think ATi have lost this round though.

Yea get an 8800, I think nvidia is better tbh, better driver support, better cards and also they dont take forever to release there flagship cards, ATi are fighting a loosing battle.

The 8800GTS is my first good Nvidia card, I has 1 FX5200 128mb, got it for £60, then a 256mb FX5200, got that for £100 1 and a half years ago  , then 9600np from ATi for £95, X800XTPE £175, now an 8800GTS for £252, what a good price, I rekon the R600 will have an insane price tag too and I wouldent be surprised if its not going to be as good as the 8800GTX, ATi must be having some majour problems though seen as its taking sooooo long to get it out.

Are you serious ? lol
driver support is the worst of the 2 by a long way (last official release for XP drivers was Jan, and even the latest beta's dont fix most the issues from that set).
The hardware isn't any better or worse TBH, I would say they are pretty even.
Gettintg the hardwareout is definatley an nvidia strong point though.

I hope that date is accurate, then 2900XTX here I come :D

I have to agree, i love my 8800gtx fantastic card but coming from a ati 1900xt i have to say the drivers were far superior, the vista drives on the 8800 series are a complete joke, and the lack of decent xp drivers too.

What i liked about ati was new drivers every month guaranteed with nvid you get crap beta drivers and have long waits for new ones, saying that i won't be trading this card in no matter how good ati's new offering is more than happy with this card.

Yea I said Nvidia Drivers were good before I looked at them properly, they got like a control center like ATi now, the drivers 2 years ago were better, but still I thought ATi Drivers were crappy and I did not like the CCC at all.

Intresting that the r600 article mentions that its faster than their previous crossfire setup. So its going to be like just a tad faster than the 8800gtx

March 30th me thinks they have gotten that article way to late as AMD have already said its delayed after that, article looks like old news they just publishing now.
