To DSLR or not to DSLR, that is the question?

Heya :)

I've recently had my much loved Fuji S5000 nicked out of my hold baggage on a well known budget (Ryan)airline.

So I find myself in the market for a new camera, unexpectedly and am a bit stick as to which way to turn?

I enjoyed using the S5000 though, to be honest, found myself just using it in totally AUTO mode all of the time.

So now I'm toying with either a Nikon D40 for about £300 - and trying to experiment a little more - or after reading so many good reviews of it, the Fuji F30/F31 for about £160 or so.

My main priorities are ease of use and image quality. Though admittedly portability is up there too, sometimes the S5000 was a pain to carry.

I mainly use my camera when I'm off on my frequent travels around the UK and beyond - so I love and take a lot landscape shots, shots of statues and monuments and that sort of thing - and arty shots along the coastline. The S5000 was superb at stuff like that, even in auto mode.

Any advice greatly received - I just don't know down which avenue to go :)

I think you would hate a DSLR. Something even smaller than a G7 might be better.

I don't think a DSLR is for you.

I went from a S5000 to a D50, best decision I ever made. I used to shoot mainly in auto mode, can't say I ever use it anymore on my D50. Much easier to see whats going on and to use all the setting with an SLR, yes its a bit heavier and bigger to carry but so what. Its worth it.

you are the same as me, hehe

you got the same camera as i had, i started with the fuji s5000 about 4 years ago, loved using it, took tons of pics. when finally DLSR's came down in price, i really wanted one.

i won a compeition last year, and thought i would get the canon 400d. best thing i ever bought! when you get your DLSR, you wont go back!

you be taking pics all the time, the quality/speed/lenses its all there, hope you find the right one. its worth it dude ;)

I went a step further, from the S5000 to the D80.
Love the D80. Picking up the S5000 now and it feels like a toy.
Same here with using the S5000, rarely took it out of Auto mode, except when out in country side. But my biggest hate of the S5000 was shutter lag, no good for taking pics of the kids running round at parties.

Ok, I'm still not sure really. I love the higher quality photos that the DSLRs offer. And I'd enjoy learning how to use one and get the most out of it manually.

I have to add though, I hardly ever do any tweaking or fiddling with Photoshop or the like either so perhaps a D50 (I've been offered one with the lens kit for around £300) or the like really would be wasted on me?

There's not really a way to get all the benefits of an SLR with none of the downsides, tbh.

"Bridge" cameras come pretty close, but obviously there are a few major things lacking between them and DSLRs.

D40 is an excellent camera, and very easy to use ;)

Very good choice as long as your not looking to upgrade the lens. Im thinking of selling my d40 next year and getting a d80, simply because of the limitations with lens choice.
