Nice counter argument.

It's not a counter or an argument, what was done was done I am not going to get into a discussion on it. Especially as it means nothing to me, if you like discuss and argue it lol

Or maybe it was because he didn't withdraw the money and it was their small interest charge like he said.
Which made him overdrawn past the pre-agreed limit.. what's your point?

and before you pull the "but he/I didn't agree" line, yes you did, when you signed the line.

No - the bank can only penalise you for their costs incurred from him going overdrawn as it is a penalty charge - which in no way is £25.

This is why when you actually summons them for the charges, they pay you back (as they won't go to court and disclose their costs - in much the same way they refused to tell the OFT).

Vixen, I'm sorry, I'll only post once.

It is not illegal for a bank to charge you an overdraft referal fee. If it was, they would not be in a position to be able to charge, then refund.

Pyro: Have a word with the manager mate.

On the whole, all branch staff, for 99.9% of banks are bloody useless. But then again, some people cant manage their money, and expect the bank to cover their own mistakes ;)

I go back to natwest every 3 months or so for a new card as my one gets battered ( the singnature strips are rubbish it just dissapeers along with the secuirty code) and not once have I had a problem replacing it

normally takes 3 days and turns up at my house

Can I talk about building societies?

Well I went to the Principality recently to update my book and then take out some money.

S - Hi there I'd like to update my book and then withdraw some money
W -How much?
S - I don't know yet, as I have 3 standing orders going in so I'd like to check before making a withdrawal.
W - No problem, Sir you have XYZ amount
S - Ok could I withdraw £300, thanks.
W - *scans my book* Hands me a reciept and asks me to sign it.
S - *signs reciept*
W - Sir your signature doesn't match
S - *WTF* What do you mean?
W - *Calls supervisor, whom scans book and signature* Do you have any ID on you.
S - Yes my driving license.
W'2 - Do you have any other proof of ID on you like a Passport or Electricity bill
S - *Walking around Cardiff with these on me ffs.* No I don't.

Turns out the book was still under my mums name from 10 years ago and in all that time no one had checked the signature. When the book was handed to me at 18 they should have altered the signature then. Since then I had put in thousands of pounds and withdrawn the same amount. The most bizzare thing was the women who flashed me for the mismatch in signatures had actually giving me money in the past. So the signature was updated and altered accordingly.

I had no apology and I was made to feel like I lied about wanting my own money.

Anyhow I let it be as I thought if someone did have my book at least they were seen doing their job, be it 10 years later.

It's not an overdraft referral fee - it's a penalty charge for unauthorised borrowing. Read the T&C of your bank account.

If this is not the case, why won't the banks go to court and put a stop to the thousands of people claiming these charges back?

Never had a problem with NatWest in the 15 years I have been with them. Ordered a new card from a random branch yesterday as well (not lost, just mine is battered so I wanted a new one). We shall see how long it takes, last time it took about 3 days.

I thought you were like 23, lol, unless you been with them since 8 years old which is possible i guess, i only opened my account when i was 16 and getting a wage.

been with them 13years and just to echo the qouted post, never had a problem.

Banks need to charge for going past your overdraft etc due to the number of plonkers losing/breaking thier cards and expecting freebie replacements :p

Dont forget the Bubbly at the shareholders meeting, the wage for that odd looking black guy in the Halifax ads etc :p

Never heard of such rubbish as "you can't have another one cause you've had too many." What bank in their right mind would say that??? "Sorry mate, you're a loyal customer but cause you've lost a card or two we're not going to give you another, so you can't have access to your own money."

Sounds to me like a clueless till clerk. Personally I think you should go to the branch manager, explain what's happened, make sure they sort it out and complain about the obvious lack of training for their staff!!

So, the rest of us are going to be stuffed then as well because the banks are gradually reducing the lifespan of cards down from three years to one (Abbey have already started issuing one-year cards.)
So that means when your issue number gets too high, they stop giving out more??? Doubt it....

Just out of interest, how many cards have you had?

This is the second time I asked for a new one, but they have sent me a total of four, I think. The other two where when they changed to chip and pin, and then I had one that wasn't working properly.

Natwest branch staff are useless, never deal with them unless you have to. If you lose your card, call lost and stolen. It's more than likely that your last card was never actually ordered and it hasn't been done this time either.
I'd recommend calling my department and saying you've not recieved a new card after requesting it from your branch. Ask them if they can check if the card was ordered and where it was sent. You will need your sort code and account number before you call. They will be able to confirm if the woman in the branch actually did order a card for you or not.
If you only went in today, I'd recommend calling tomorrow, as the systems can take up to 24 hours for an ordered card to update. You will need to call before 8pm or they won't be able to check. Don't bother going to customer services instead, because half of them haven't got a clue about card systems and completely mis-inform customers.
Our main number is 0870 609 0000 - and go for the debit cards option.

EDIT: if the woman has been messing you around, then definately speak to the manager.

I do have the first slip she gave me, when I asked for a new card the first time, but come on, just because I am a foreigner doesn't mean she has to ignore half the things I tell her! I know my accent is pretty crap but if she didn't understan something she could ask again...!

Anyway I have a lot of things coming up this week, final year and all, so I will just wait till Friday for my card, then call the number you gave me.

Yeah why would they be suspicious of a foreign looking guy with a funny accent and no eye brows that keeps asking for replacement cards?

Yes.. its a penalty charge, called an Overdraft Referal Fee.. I work for a bank :o

if you want anything done, go in and talk to them about it. I needed a new card as mine was broken, I went in, 5 days later new card.

I've been with Natwest for well over 25 years. Never had a problem with them in all that time. In fact quite the opposite, I've always found them to be very helpful in my local branch.

2 years ago my I was the victim of card fraud, my switch card had been cloned and my account had been cleared out. Natwest were great, the staff couldn't do enough to help me. They got on the case straight way, gave me an interest free overdraft of several grand, so i wouldn't be an financial difficulty. All my money was back in my account with a few days.

Much like the above.

I've been with Nat West for 23 years.

If i go overdrawn then i pay the penalty, simply as .

On the occasion i got into real finacial difficulties and the charges kept adding to the overdraft the branch manager was quite happy to look at it and agreed to waive them.

Posting on here may make you feel better, but address the problem.

a lot of these posts are one sided, look after your bloody card !

I'm with Natwest at the mo too and whilst the manager isn't too helpful (she always forgets me and me being the person I am, I just wait until about an hour goes past before asking about anything :o ) the staff are very helpful. People at the Sheffield brance are good too :)

NatWest in Middlesbrough was the first bank in Britain to get 100% perfect feedback from all customers in a questionaire survey.

My NatWest in Saltburn has a fantastic member of staff by the name of "Jo Jenkins", I do all my business via her as she's never steered me wrong, she's had NatWest re-issue me money for late fee's and she remembers who I am :).
