I though'd I seek advice into this as its been bugging me. At the moment Im running a Q6600 and looking into upgrading. However Ive been recommended that I should consider waiting for haswell, which is a year away.

Now, I can understand why people would say that to me, as i just bought a new 450W PSU and some DDR2 RAM on a spending spree. However, I saw that some people have gone from Q6600 to Ivybridge, so I'm thinking is now the time to upgrade?

thoughts please

i would wait for haswell, pretty much regretting moving from my i7 920 @ 4.2ghz + 5850 crossfire to 3770k and 7970,...

dont get me wrong you will seen a nice boost in performance coming from a q6600. it all depends if you can wait or not!

Is your chip overclocked and which motherboard do you have? If you have a poorly clocking Q6600 you could probably buy a Q9550/Q9650 now for a small upgrade then resell in a year when Haswell is released. The Q9XXX series are holding their value well as they're the top end chips for Core 2 motherboards so you probably won't lose much in depreciation in the next 12 months.

yeah, would have been helpful if I mentioned my current MB, my bad

*searches through boxes*

right, so my current board is a Asus P5Q, and never been clocked. When I started with this stuff years ago I never wanted to overclock, in fact my old case didnt even have the room! I would consider a mini upgrade however Im one of those annoying people who would rather upgrade and have it like that for a few years instead of upgrading then upgrading then upgrading ever half year/1 year

From a Q6600 to IB is very worthwhile. The only people who shouldn't really bother are SB owners because the real-world difference is unnoticeable (4-5% at stock and overclocked).

I would move Ivy is great fun if your a clocker and the performance improvement over your last chip will be a lot!!!!!! Also the IMC is very strong which gives you loads on options for RAM overclocking. It also has native PCI ex 3.0 support which althogh means little currently when you upgrade your graphics in future you will be covered.

thanks for the input people. I guess if I want to go for IB now I should go high end motherboards right? Also, for the time being, if I want to go to IB would my Antec VP450P be enough for the time being? As for the moment Im not planning to go crossfire

Check out my comparison coming from a Q6600 @ 3.5 to an I5 3570k. Huge improvements with my GPUS - even a single GPU improved a sizeable amount. I'm selling old 775 on EBay and getting good money for them, makes the upgrade very cheap.

I was looking at moving to Q9*** series but they're hideously expensive.
