To lap or not to lap?.

thanks guy's for more info :).

Get your voltages down a bit! 1.35v is an insane amount for 4ghz, try 1.3v mine only needs 1.27v for 4Ghz, but needs 1.38 for 4.3Ghz.

I did post in the overclocking section about this. I use to able to run at 4ghz with 1.26volts then one day i switch my pc on and it would not boot and kept on saying overclock profile failed, so i upped to volts to 1.35 and now it's been stable. I have been told to update my bios as that mite help.

If money is not an issue go ahead and lap it, i heard some people remove the Heat Spreader to get direct contact with core which would probably give you the lowest temps but i would only do that when warranty has run out and newer stuff will be out in months.

Check out removal of Heat Speader http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=222040

Wouldn't it damage the core though in long term?

I don't think having a direct contact with core transistors is a good idea though.

It won't damage anything as long as you are careful mounting the heatsink. Lots of processors don't even have a IHS.

But I was thinking that since core transistors are in the nm length and very very tiny, putting some heavy objects onto them will be like placing a million ton weight onto them, when looking from nm length perspective.

Or is there any further protective layer between IHS and cores?

Yeah if you remove the IHS you could crack the die if you tighten the heatsink to tight, those big air coolers would be bad for that, but i think a mounted waterblock should be ok with one of the best thermal pastes would give you very low temps on a CPU with IHS removed.

whats the big deal of removing the IHS! when i first started with the athlon xp1700+ it was shipped without the IHS :) risking damaging your chip when instaling HSF was part of the fun! lol

that chip overclocked like a bitch :D

still got a "golden" xp1700 in my bits box, it oc'd from 1.4ghz to 2.2!

Not intel, but I just lapped my Phenom today. It was slightly concave, took less than an hour and has saved me about 4c load temp.

Not enough of a saving for me to consider doing an expensive chip! Kinda fun though.

Is it, though?

Mine reports 1.34v in CPU-Z in idle, drops down to 1.27v under full load. This board has a pretty hefty voltage drop and some voltage droop as well.

Only using 168.5 MHz bclk, gives me 3.54Ghz-4.05GHz, depending on how many cores are loaded, with Turbo Boost on.
