So I brought a GTX 285 OC2 BFG card the other day for like £220. Its still sealed on my desk and I am wondering if I have "plunked" to late for the card.

Is it worth me returning the card and waiting til the new line of things comes out?

Depends how much you need the performance increase imo, if you need the boost now then keep the GTX285 and wait for the DX11's to come out and settle in.
You cant garuantee when the new lines will be available or the price tags.

just my 2p

Not sure if it's worth waiting for the new stuff which is gonna be a while but I would rather take 4890 which will do just fine with everything for a bit of time yet and if you need more power later you can add second in CF for a silly price or sell it for not much less than you bought it and get a new one.

Don't think the 58xx series will be this much faster than the current ones and probably the first ones to come will be 5830/5850/5870 and I don't think that this will be much faster than the OCed 4890 : ).

Same on the nvidia side, if the new stuff will be as new as the 8800>9800 jump it will probably just be a slight OCed version of the 285.

What is your full setup anyways? That would definitely help with the choice, maybe it will be better to spend the money elsewhere ?

Im a student so I am short on cash, thus I don't have the cash for upgrades every 6 months.

Have just retired my old C2D rig that was getting on.

i7 920 D0 stepping,
6Gb DDR3 1600Mhz
Asus P6T Deluxe
2x1tb HDD.
Dell 2407wfp (soon to be 2408)

Well if you didn't notice, the 4890 is about 100GBP cheaper than the 285 ;-).
So you sort of save there. And if the new GPUs in lets say half year turn out to be a lot better you can sell this, add that 50-100quid and get something better than the 285 probably.

Or you can just get cheap second hand 4890 for crossfire and yet again have something better for less.

You're obviously not that short on cash with the i7 ;-).
What's the GPU tho ? That would be the main component here that we want to know : ).

Dell 2407wfp (soon to be 2408)

If you're sensitive to input lag and you play a lot of FPS games (of which you must play a few if even considered a 285) then you should know that the input lag the 2408 is higher than it is on the 2407.

A whole bunch of reviews for the 2408 can be found here...

If you really need all the extra connections the 2408 provides of the 2407 then I'd say go for it. For my 2407, I've got:

DVI port = PS3 and 360 via an HDMI selector
VGA port = PC
Component = Wii
Composite = PS2

I have swung round to keeping the GTX 285 OC2.

Apparently the 4890 is meant to be incredibly loud and not quite as fast as the GTX 285 OC even when OC'ed.

Would anyone here support keeping the GTX 285OC2 over selling it and getting a 4890?

I just bought a 285 two weeks ago, loving it. And yes the sound is quiet and not noticeable above the normal system ambiance.

I figure still three months to go and how much better will it be? Will the games you play require it? It will cost a bomb. You have the card now. The only game that requires it will be Crysis and you've already played that ;)

Personally I would stick with the GTX. Quieter, faster, uses less power, less driver hassles. Well worth the difference and my next card once they come back into stock.
