...here are some mods you shouldn't be without!

--------------------------------------------

Soulstorm Ultimate Apocalypse Mod

OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

Seriously, OMG.

Tyranids. Titans. Every race... like, just... wow... and it brought my system to its knees. The zoom has also been outrageously tweaked and you can basically zoom out across entire maps.

I can see this sucking up some serious time now as I rekindle my love of all things Dawn of War.

You simply have to play it, it's the most epic mod I have ever seen. Staggering.

Download it here (base game, then latest patch) http://www.moddb.com/mods/ultimate-apocalypse-mod

Then download and install Tyranids / Chaos Daemons / Inquisition Daemon Hunters from here http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?277691-Hub-All-Standalone-factions

--------------------------------------------

Codex Complete

Versions supported:- SS

Personally for me this is one of the best... if you haven't installed this yet then it's a MUST-HAVE. The team who made it have created the game DOW can really stretch its legs in... there are tons of new armies (specific and unique SM chapters, Chaos Demons, IG Chaos Renegades, Grey Knights, Inquisition etc etc) and models (thanks to the closer to codex team), effects, sounds... not to mention a heap of new unit types and upgrades that really give it the "40k feel" that was lacking from the original... hell, they even re-made the icons! Best of all though is that the gameplay mechanic has been significantly changed, and if you play each race you will see the sheer depth of the changes that have been made. For example the Tau have been completely re-worked to use a different path system, the marines structure changed... Chaos now have all 4 God path upgrades... the list really does go on. Oh, and did I mention it uses the awesome Skirmish AI? Essential stuff.

Download it here http://www.moddb.com/mods/codex

--------------------------------------------

Them I did some research into more mods and found one called Codex Complete. Double ******* awesome

Tabletop Roundup SS

Versions supported:- SS

Played it ages ago but it's now been improved. Completely changes the game to about 10x more realistic Warhammer epicness. Read the changelog and see for yourself. Things die fast... infantry get cut down by gunfire and vehicles shredded by heavy guns. Plus the vehicles are MUCH more fluff-based now. Plus, all units and buildings scaled down to more realistic (and low resolution friendly) sizes. Really good fun, probably my favourite mod at the moment along with Codex Complete. Latest version now supports SS http://forums.relicnews.com/showthr...nd-Up-SS-Skirmish-AI-3-0-1-4-released-Page-55

Skirmish AI

Versions supported:- DC, SS

No MOD thread would be complete without mention of the one, the only, the mind-boggingly good Skirmish AI. If like me you found the AI in DC and SS (Especially SS, it was atrocious) about as much fun as peeling your skin off and jumping in a bath of salt, then this is the single best thing you can install if you want to keep the vanilla feel of the games, but greatly enhance the AI. With it the AI will make fukll use of all its resources... harassing you intelligently and sending all the big guns out to smash your base. If it's in trouble it will retreat, if it sees a gap it will try and maneuver into it. It's basically the closest you can get to p[laying against a good human player! Latest version now supports SS http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?t=188730

--------------------------------------------

Annihilation Mod

Versions supported:- DC

Another "re-work" mod. This, like DOWXP, changes the game both visually and gameplay-wise, adding many "closer to codex" models, effects, sounds as well as new unit types, skirmish AI, upgrades... the list goes on! Not quite as polished as DOWXP imo, but then again I haven't really given this one too much time in comparison, so maybe I just need to play it more. One cool feature is that you can now add wargear to your heroes like you could in the single-player campaigh of DC... gives a more epic feel to sending in your bad-ass commander!

--------------------------------------------

There are tons more mods that I could mention ranging in scale and quality but these are the "big three" for me, and I hope some guys who maybe haven't got into the DOW modding scene find those useful... they really will add a ton of longevity to the game and provide many hours of joy, especially if you have a mate to play online skirmishes with! Anyone who hasn't tried any of them, do so and let me know what you think! :)

DOWXP gets my vote, such a fun mod. Thanks for the post Richdog.

Shame mods like these wont really be possible for DOW2 using the essence engine :(

Wha... wha... what do you mean they won't really be possible? Is it not a mod-friendly engine? Don't say things like this to me, you'll give me a heart-attack... :(

If you take a look at the Company of Heroes forum you'll see how annoying the essence is to work with, most mods cant introduce new models (not sure if this is still the case with the new SDK for CoH) but just change the skins and new game play styles.

It is a very very beautiful engine though, but only the most dedicated could hope to produce total conversion mods for it :(, certainly not as easy and fun as the DoW engine. But to be honest being able to see a completely 3/D Squigoth or Avatar of Khane with full HDR lighting and effects more than makes up for it :D

I was planning on getting the latest expansion, I'll check these mods out for sure. Thanks :)

Ill have to wait for the soulstorm version of XP first.
Uninstalled all my DoW games after SS was installed.

Wish they would fix that Sisters of Battle bug tho.

Install Skirmish AI right this second if you have SS installed... the stock AI is so bad whoever wrote it should be shot.

Dark Crusade is a much more superior and balanced game overall... the two new races in SS added nothing except headahces.

Relic didn't realise the SDK for CoH for the best part of the games current life.. so yes full mods were pretty much impossible without it... tis beyond my scope of understanding really though, im just a modeller

Ancient, ancient thread I know, but just wanted to say that I dusted my copy of SoulStorm off and started playing again with Skirmish AI. Awesome, brought back memories.

Adds some very cool new races like Daemons (all Chaos Gods catered for) and chapters, as well as loads of units, game tweaks and graphics model upgrades. Every time I get this game out again I find something to breathe new life into it (read: mods that were WIP and now complete, heh). Such an epic game and plays fine on my crummy 6330 laptop GPU. :)

All these years I've been reinstalling and playing through them again and I never bothered thinking about mods :o

I'd say they improve the game about 300%... Skirmish AI itself is great, but som eof the mods absolutely change the game into something that every Warhammer 40k fan dreams of. Codex Complete is one of the best examples i've found. All they need to do it remake the entire game with a new moddable 3D engine, improve the controls and UI to that of a modern RTS, add all the major Warhammer 40k races, then as far as i'm concerned they can call it DOW3 and have done with it. :D
