To upgrade or not - are PCs good value?

last years pc:
A64 3000+ cpu (sold for £70)
old crappy case
X800GTO2 (sold for £140)
4X 512mb sticks of DDR (sold for £85)
120 gig seagate

this years pc
Opty 146 (cost £105)
Antec super lanboy case (£28) 58
X1800XT 512mb (£240)
2X 1 gig sticks of corsair XMS (£95)
200 gig sata (£45)
120 gig external (£13 on external caddy)

total cost of virtually a new pc for me for the next 12 months. £226, half the cost of a top of the line ps3 and more power to boot. id say thats a bargain personally.

PC's do cost a lot, but my current PC can play nearly everything full whack, and when console junkies come round they can't believe how good FEAR looks, or BF2 with its massive maps and 64 player action.

There's also the fact that I dont really like console games. Pro Evolution and maybe the odd hack n slash (lord of the rings etc.) with the girlfriend, but mostly they just don't interest me. FPS, stratagy games, flight sims etc. only really work on the PC, and these are the games i like playing :)

My PC has also become the media centre of the house, with music and videos being played through it and sent to hifis and tvs around the house..

keyboard and mouse > any console controller for first person/thirdperson games PERIOD. I only prefer console controllers for beatemups and platform games ;\

OT

What hardware do you use to achieve this?

As a long time pc gamer myself I've always been able to justify the cost simply because of other thing I use the pc for, such as music/graphics Applications etc. An all in one solution if you will.

But just for gaming (espescially keeping up with the latest games), yeah its not exactly cheap. I think of it more as a hobby though. I like to overclock my rig and mess about. I guess the lines are blurring more these days but I still stand by pc gaming for the diversity in mods and stuff you can get for many games. Its just more open-ended. I like to tinker, and some games I've enjoyed modding them as much as playing them, lol

nobodys mentioned xbox live costs yet - 40 pounds per year is it?, pc online gaming is free :D

and im reasonably sure pc games will always be prettier for the forseeable future

PC multiplayer can be fun but I expect it's taken to a whole new level with Xbox Live when you can speak to your opponents. Not tried it myself yet but I certainly looking forward to it.

I aint read the whole thread so this maybe a little off topic, but its been said loads that console gaming will kill pc gaming one day. Personnaly I think its the other way round. Every new generation of console is slowly getting more pc like. I think 5 years for now a console will be little more than an off the shelf standised PC that looks nice sat on the floor new to the tv

That's what they really are - a PC with a simplified GUI. Even the PS3 is going to be running Linux but with a GUI so most of the features are hidden.
