Hi guys, hope you had a good Christmas!

I have been given a £300 voucher for a university stationary store, which sells some electronics.
Their range is very limited when it comes to electronics. Going through their range of PC components, I came across the MSI NVIDIA GTX 970 GAMING 4GB Graphics card.

Now the question is, would it be worth it to upgrade to the card above with my ancient rig? (specs are in my signature). I've had the 570 since launch and I can still play most games at medium/low.

£299 is their price. I have noticed that everything is overpriced on there.
 
You'll find the cpu a bottleneck certainly, I recently upgraded from a Q8300 to an i7 870 which is still old by any standard but the performance jump my i7 gave to my old GTX580 was striking!

As the voucher is for the store at Uni I'd go with the 970 from there but with the long term upgrade in mind, it'll be great with a new modern cpu.
 
certainly will give you a very decent performance increase on the GPU side. However your CPU is not great as others have said. But given its kinda free. Its a worth while upgrade.
 
Thanks guys, been out of the loop for a while now.
The voucher doesn't expire until May, is it worth picking up the card now or is there anything new coming out from Nvidia any time soon?


EDIT: Also forgot to mention, at the moment I am gaming on 1680 x 1050 resolution due to the size of my monitor (told you my rig is ancient :p)

Newer graphics cards aren't expected until April/May or beyond anyway. Get the 970 now and enjoy it.

It would be worth waiting but the chances of new GPU's arriving before May are basically 0.
Wait and see or get it now. By the time new GPU's do arrive it will still be worth £150 on the used market.
 
Thanks guys, I think I will go ahead and put an order in. I can always sell it on now when it's still new and get one at a cheaper price if I change my mind by the time it gets delivered.
 
Good choice and if you do upgrade your rig and also your monitor to 1080. The 970 will still perform well at that resolution.
